Polish prosecutors have charged Roman Ż. over alleged crimes involving 7.8 million Polish zlotys ($2.1 million) in Zondacrypto user funds and are seeking his temporary detention. Authorities allege that he belonged to an organized criminal group that targeted cryptocurrency exchange customers.

The case is part of an ongoing criminal investigation into Zondacrypto, one of Poland’s popular cryptocurrency exchanges. It concerns alleged manipulation of exchange data and the loss of millions of zlotys in customer funds.

Suspect Faces Two Charges

Roman Ż. was arrested on September 5, 2026, and later questioned by Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office at its branch in Gliwice. Prosecutors accuse him of participating in an organized criminal group and of allegedly taking assets belonging to the cryptocurrency exchange that had been entrusted to his custody.

At least 7.8 million Polish zlotys ($2.1 million) are alleged to have been lost in connection with the charges.

According to prosecutors, the alleged activity involved unauthorized changes to computer records forming part of the cryptocurrency exchange’s system. Investigators said the conduct included changing, deleting, or adding information and interfering with the automatic processing, storage, and transmission of exchange data.

Roman Ż. denies the allegations and has provided an explanation to prosecutors. The accusations have not resulted in a final court judgment, and the suspect has not been found guilty.

Prosecutors Request Pretrial Detention

Prosecutors said the suspect’s statement, together with the evidence collected during the investigation, indicated a high probability that the complainants had been victims of criminal offenses. They also cited grounds for seeking detention to protect the investigation.

The National Prosecutor’s Office has asked the Katowice-Wschód District Court to temporarily detain Roman Ż. Prosecutors pointed to the possibility of a prison sentence of up to 10 years, as well as concerns that the suspect could obstruct the investigation or evade punishment. Temporary detention is a pretrial measure under Polish procedure, applied while an investigation is pending and distinct from any final sentence.

Authorities said the investigation had produced evidence supporting those concerns. The court will determine whether the request for temporary detention is justified.

The new charges represent another development in the criminal inquiry surrounding Zondacrypto. The allegations specifically concern unauthorized changes to exchange records, which are used by cryptocurrency platforms to maintain information about customer portfolios, transactions, and the movement of assets.
