Key Takeaways

  • •Zcash developers are upstreaming Project Tachyon's recursive-proof technology into Zakura Common, the cryptographic stack behind the new Zakura full node.
  • •Recursive proofs allow a single proof to verify many others, reducing transaction data and validator state in support of a target exceeding 50,000 private payments per second.
  • •Zakura launched in July as a full node developed by Project Tachyon and Valar Group, whose developers cite more than 50,000 transactions per second as the baseline for card-network-scale payments.
  • •Zakura Common previously reduced private transaction creation time from more than three seconds to under 200 milliseconds, with improvements to hashing, wallet synchronization, and verification adoptable by wallets without a network upgrade.
  • •Tachyon has not been activated on the Zcash mainnet, and its path to a live protocol upgrade remains the key milestone for the 50,000-TPS effort.
Zcash Pushes Toward 50,000 TPS Goal With Project Tachyon Integration

Zcash developers have begun integrating Project Tachyon's recursive-proof technology into Zakura Common, the cryptography stack that powers the new Zakura full node. The effort supports a longer-term goal of processing more than 50,000 private payments per second, and marks another step in Zcash's push to make shielded payments — transactions whose zero-knowledge proofs keep sender, recipient, and amount details private — operate at the scale of global payment networks. Tachyon remains a proposed upgrade and has not been activated on the Zcash mainnet.

Tachyon Moves Into Core Infrastructure

Project Tachyon said developers are now upstreaming its recursive proofs into Zakura Common, a move that will let Tachyon use optimized cryptographic components already built for Zcash's newer software stack.

Tachyon and Zcash's Ironwood system share the Pasta elliptic curve cycle, but Tachyon introduces additional requirements for recursive proofs and vector commitments. Recursive proofs allow a single proof to verify many others, compressing verification work that would otherwise be repeated — the property underpinning Tachyon's approach to shrinking transaction data. Developers are therefore adjusting Common's architecture so it can support both systems more directly. The team has also released new Zakura crates that replace mature components of its earlier Ragu codebase, an approach that could reduce duplicated cryptographic code while allowing Tachyon to benefit from existing performance work.

Building Toward 50,000 Private Payments

Zakura launched in July as a new Zcash full node developed by Project Tachyon and Valar Group. Its developers have described more than 50,000 transactions per second as a baseline for supporting payments at the scale of major card networks, a throughput level few blockchain networks have reached.

CoinDesk reported in August that Zakura Common had already produced major performance gains. In some cases, the software cut private transaction creation from more than three seconds to under 200 milliseconds, an indication of how computationally intensive creating shielded transactions had been. The new stack also improves hashing, wallet synchronization and transaction verification, and developers say wallets can adopt these improvements without requiring a Zcash network upgrade.

Tachyon is designed to address deeper scaling constraints through recursive proofs and proof-carrying data, an architecture intended to reduce transaction sizes and the amount of state validators must maintain. Keeping validator state small is widely regarded as central sustaining high throughput, since resource requirements grow with the amount of data a network carries.

The latest integration does not itself deliver 50,000 transactions per second. Instead, it strengthens the cryptographic foundation developers are building toward that target. With Tachyon still awaiting mainnet activation, its path from this groundwork to a live protocol upgrade remains the key milestone for the 50,000-TPS effort.
