Grayscale Says Zcash Could Challenge Bitcoin's Network Effects as AI Raises Privacy Stakes

Author: Cointelegraph·

Key Takeaways

  • Grayscale's head of research Zach Pandl argues that Zcash's privacy features and "second mover advantages" could allow it to challenge Bitcoin's entrenched network effects as AI raises surveillance concerns.
  • Zcash has surged roughly 19-fold over the past year but still represents less than 1% of Bitcoin's market capitalization, which Grayscale sees as potential upside.
  • Grayscale estimates Zcash could be valued above $4,000 if its market capitalization reached 5% of Bitcoin's, while cautioning that ZEC remains a high-risk and potentially volatile investment.
  • Privacy coins like Zcash have historically faced delistings by major exchanges and regulatory scrutiny across multiple jurisdictions, tempering institutional adoption.
  • Cypherpunk Technologies expanded its Zcash exposure by acquiring a Winklevoss Capital mining fleet in a $33.33 million equity deal, operating about 18% of the network's total hashrate.
Grayscale Says Zcash Could Challenge Bitcoin's Network Effects as AI Raises Privacy Stakes

Zcash could emerge as a meaningful challenger to Bitcoin's dominance among digital assets, as rapid adoption of artificial intelligence places a premium on financial privacy and intensifies concerns over AI-powered surveillance, according to Grayscale.

In a research report, Grayscale head of research Zach Pandl argued that Zcash (ZEC) holds "second mover advantages" that could help it challenge Bitcoin's (BTC) entrenched network effects — a feat previous alternatives such as Litecoin (LTC) have failed to achieve.

Financial privacy sits at the core of Pandl's argument. Zcash can shield transaction information, a capability Grayscale believes could become increasingly valuable as AI systems grow more adept at analyzing financial activity at scale.

Zcash, launched in 2016, was built around zero-knowledge cryptography — specifically zk-SNARKs, which allow transactions to be verified without revealing sender, recipient, or amount. Unlike Bitcoin, whose ledger is fully public, Zcash lets users choose between transparent and shielded transactions, making privacy an opt-in design feature rather than an add-on.

The report follows ZEC's roughly 19-fold price increase over the past year. Despite those gains, Zcash remains valued at less than 1% of Bitcoin's market capitalization — a disparity Grayscale views as evidence of further upside if Zcash captures market share. According to the report, Zcash could be valued at more than $4,000 if its market capitalization reached 5% of Bitcoin's.

Pandl acknowledged that Bitcoin's liquidity and entrenched network remain powerful defenses of its dominant position. Grayscale also cautioned that Zcash remains a high-risk investment, and that any further gains could be volatile and uneven.

Privacy-focused coins have historically faced headwinds that other digital assets have not: several major exchanges have delisted privacy coins over the years, citing regulatory and compliance concerns, and the assets remain under scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions. That backdrop has tempered institutional adoption of privacy tokens even as privacy technology itself has gained broader use across the crypto industry.

Zcash ecosystem attracts institutional capital

Interest in the Zcash ecosystem is broadening alongside ZEC's strong price performance. As Cointelegraph recently reported, Nasdaq-listed privacy technology company Cypherpunk Technologies expanded its Zcash exposure by acquiring a mining fleet from Winklevoss Capital in a $33.33 million equity-based transaction.

The operation is already online across US facilities, producing about 4.2 GSol/s of Equihash hashrate — roughly 18% of the Zcash network's total computing power. Cypherpunk said the deal made its mining arm the network's largest active fleet.
