Corning (GLW) Stock Falls 5% as Zayo Extends Fiber Supply Deal Through 2030

Zayo has signed an expanded fiber optic supply agreement with Corning (GLW) through 2030.

The deal secures fiber for Zayo’s plan to add 15,000 route miles to its network by 2030. More than 8,000 miles of new long-haul fiber will be built in partnership with NVIDIA.

Corning stock fell 4.65% to $152.46 on the day of the announcement, with after-hours trading showing a further decline to $152.21.

The agreement runs through 2030 and covers a large portion of the fiber Zayo expects to need over that period. For Zayo, it removes a key materials risk from a multi-year construction plan and gives the company more visibility as it works through the long lead times involved in network expansion.

Zayo said it is planning to add 15,000 route miles to its network by the end of the decade. More than 8,000 of those miles will be new long-haul fiber built in collaboration with NVIDIA.

CEO Steve Smith said AI infrastructure is changing where and how quickly network capacity needs to be built. He said locking in fiber supply means material availability will not slow delivery.

The broader demand behind the agreement is artificial intelligence. Data centers and cloud providers are requiring more fiber, at faster speeds and in greater density than before, putting pressure on raw material supply chains and making long-term supply arrangements more relevant for operators planning multi-year builds.

AI Demand Is Reshaping Network Planning

Corning Senior Vice President Steve Mitchell said AI is increasing both the amount and density of fiber optic cable required across networks. He described the agreement as bringing together Corning’s optical technology and Zayo’s network expertise to build physical AI infrastructure at scale.

Troy Lupe, Zayo’s chief network officer, said long-haul network construction takes years of planning, permitting, and execution. He said securing fiber supply early removes one critical variable from that process.

Zayo currently operates a network of 32 million fiber miles and 224,000 route miles across North America. It connects more than 400 markets globally and serves carriers, cloud providers, data centers, enterprises, schools, and governments.

A Network Built for the AI Era

The NVIDIA collaboration is a notable part of the expansion. More than half of the new route miles planned are tied to that long-haul buildout, underscoring how hyperscaler demand is shaping physical network investment.

For Corning, the agreement is a supply commitment rather than a one-time order. It gives the company a clearer demand outlook through the rest of the decade, even though the market did not react positively on the day.

The agreement was announced in a press release on August 20, 2026. Corning closed the session at $152.46, down $7.44 on the day.
