Taiwanese shipping company Yang Ming has signed a shipbuilding contract with Hanwha Ocean for six LNG dual-fuel container ships, confirming an order plan that was first approved by the company’s board in March.
The 13,000 TEU ships are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2029 and will be designed to allow future conversion to ammonia propulsion, the company said in an announcement today. The order adds to Yang Ming’s ongoing fleet renewal programme, as container lines continue to replace older tonnage with vessels that can use lower-emission fuels or be adapted for them later.
Yang Ming said the vessels will be deployed on major East-West trades linking Asia with the Americas and the Mediterranean.
The ships are part of the carrier's wider fleet renewal programme and are intended to replace ageing vessels and ships approaching charter expiry in the 4,250-6,500 TEU range.
Yang Ming has several more dual-fuel LNG container ships on order. The company also announced orders for methanol-ready container ships last year.
