World Foundation Raises $52.5 Million Led by Pantera Capital to Scale Proof-of-Human Identity Infrastructure

World, the Sam Altman-backed digital identity project, has raised $52.5 million in a locked token sale to strategic investors as it pivots from network-building toward enterprise integration of its biometric verification technology. The funding round was led by Pantera Capital, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto and Eightco Holdings, the World Foundation announced Friday.

The World Foundation, the independent nonprofit steward of the protocol, said the new capital will be deployed to integrate its Orb-based "proof of human" identity technology across enterprise platforms and AI agents. The announcement comes amid growing concern across the technology industry over bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online—challenges that have intensified as generative AI tools become more capable and widely deployed. A locked token sale means investors are restricted from immediately trading their tokens, signaling a longer-term commitment to the project's roadmap.

Enterprise Shift

The investment marks a strategic transition for the project, which was previously known as Worldcoin. Having spent its early phase expanding the network's user base, World is now focusing on scaling the utility of its identity infrastructure—targeting authentication, payments, and internet services. The pivot comes as demand for bot-resistant verification grows among platforms facing automated fraud, sybil attacks, and the proliferation of AI-generated content that can be difficult to distinguish from human output.

"The need for Proof of Human is becoming acutely clear with the acceleration of AI development, and we see this in the influx of enterprise traction," said Cosmo Jiang, General Partner at Pantera Capital, in a statement.

Tom Lee, an Eightco Holdings board member who also serves as chairman of Bitmine, added: "World's technology and proof of human and variations are among the most important building blocks to secure and verify interactions in an increasingly digital driven world."

Network Reach

To date, more than 39 million people have joined the World Network, with over 18 million individuals verified by an Orb device. The network has issued more than 475 million World ID proofs since its launch, according to the funding announcement press release. The project aims to establish an identity layer capable of distinguishing unique human individuals from automated bots, relying on custom hardware called the Orb to issue privacy-preserving credentials.

In April, World unveiled what it described as its most significant upgrade yet to World ID, positioning the system as "full-stack proof of human" infrastructure designed for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents.

World's biometric approach distinguishes it from other digital identity efforts that rely on government-issued documents or phone-based attestation. However, the project has faced regulatory scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions, including investigations into data collection practices under European privacy regulations and temporary operational suspensions in certain markets—factors that remain relevant as the Foundation pushes deeper into enterprise adoption.

Funding History

This latest round follows the World Network's first funding round in May of last year, when it raised $135 million in a private token sale of its WLD token to venture capital firms a16z and Bain Capital Crypto. Bain Capital Crypto's return as a participant in the current round underscores continued investor interest in the proof-of-human category despite the regulatory and operational hurdles the project has navigated.

WLD is currently priced at approximately $0.37, with a market capitalization of just over $1.3 billion.
