World Liberty Financial is working to bring its USD1 stablecoin into mainstream online commerce through a new partnership with payments infrastructure provider Mesh. Stablecoins such as USD1 are designed to track the value of a traditional currency — in this case, the U.S. dollar — a design that makes them candidates for payments where price volatility would be impractical.
The collaboration was announced Wednesday during a stablecoin panel at TOKEN2049, one of the crypto industry's largest annual conferences, in Singapore. WLFI CEO Zach Witkoff and co-founder Zak Folkman took the stage alongside Mesh co-founder and CEO Bam Azizi, with the conference's official agenda listing the session as "The Next Era of Stablecoin Payments."
Through the partnership, USD1 holders could gain a broader way to spend the dollar-pegged token. Mesh intends to make USD1 available across its merchant network in the fourth quarter.
Reaching beyond crypto-native users
Folkman said WLFI is additionally working to bring the technology to some of the largest Web2 businesses — established internet companies outside the crypto industry — though he did not name the companies involved or give specific launch dates.
The strategy marks another step in WLFI's push to turn USD1 from a crypto trading asset into a wider payments instrument. The company states that USD1 is redeemable one-to-one for U.S. dollars and backed by cash, U.S. government money market funds and other cash equivalents, the kind of reserve structure stablecoin issuers use to maintain a token's dollar peg.
WLFI has also been extending USD1 into other financial applications. Reuters reported in February that the firm's World Liberty Markets lending platform had recorded $320 million in lending and more than $200 million in borrowing.
Payments push adds to USD1 expansion
Bloomberg reported in June that USD1 had become a major source of revenue for the Trump family-backed venture. The stablecoin's growth has also drawn support from its presence on Binance, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, where much of its supply is held.
For online merchants, stablecoins can deliver faster settlement and potentially lower transaction costs than traditional payment rails. WLFI is positioning USD1 around those use cases, while Mesh supplies the infrastructure that connects the token with merchants.
How quickly major businesses adopt USD1, and whether consumers embrace stablecoins for everyday purchases, will determine the initiative's success. Near-term markers include the planned fourth-quarter merchant availability and any Web2 partnerships WLFI chooses to disclose. For now, the Mesh rollout stands as WLFI's clearest effort yet to move USD1 closer to mainstream digital commerce.
