Visa has appointed Kunal Chatterjee as its new president for Korea and Mongolia, entrusting him with accelerating the growth of digital payments across the two markets.

In the role, Chatterjee will oversee Visa's business strategy in Korea and Mongolia and work to strengthen the company's relationships with financial institutions, merchants and other partners in the two countries. The remit spans two very different markets: South Korea, one of the world's most card-intensive economies, and Mongolia, a far smaller payments market.

Chatterjee brings nearly two decades of experience at Visa, where he has held leadership positions spanning product innovation, client management and business development across the Asia-Pacific region. That track record aligns closely with the partner-facing priorities of his new role, given Visa's core business of connecting financial institutions, merchants and acquirers through its global payments network.

Most recently, he led Visa's Asia-Pacific merchant sales and value-added services business, overseeing the commercialization and sale of payment solutions for merchants, acquirers and partners.

His earlier roles at the payments company include head of innovation for Asia-Pacific, president for Singapore and Brunei, and vice president for global clients in the region from 2016 to 2018.

Chatterjee holds an MBA from Newcastle University in the UK and a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Delhi in India.

Arturo Planell, Visa's country manager for Japan, Korea and Mongolia, said Chatterjee's experience across business development, products and consulting would help deepen local partnerships and support sustained growth in digital commerce. Under the new leadership, attention will center on how Visa builds out its merchant relationships and value-added services in Korea and Mongolia — the same areas Chatterjee oversaw at the regional level in his most recent post.
