Key Takeaways

  • •The Visa-Mesh partnership, announced on October 19, will let users pay directly from crypto and stablecoin wallets at over 175 million merchant locations in more than 200 countries and territories.
  • •Mesh will act as program manager, handling transaction funding, asset conversion, user onboarding, KYC, and compliance so platforms can integrate without building their own card-issuing systems.
  • •Merchants need no new equipment or checkout changes because payments flow through Visa's existing infrastructure, which processed $14.2 trillion in payment volume during fiscal 2025.
  • •Research cited by Mesh projects 774 million global crypto owners by June 2026, while crypto card usage had reached only about $1.5 billion in monthly volume by late 2025.
  • •The partnership has not yet announced which wallets will launch first, which devices will be supported, or when consumers will gain access.
Visa and Mesh Partner to Enable Crypto Payments at 175 Million Merchant Locations Worldwide

Visa and Mesh are building a new payment bridge designed to make digital assets usable at everyday checkout. Announced on October 19, the partnership will connect crypto and stablecoin balances held in participating wallets with Visa's global acceptance network, according to the official announcement.

Users will be able to pay directly from their wallets at more than 175 million merchant locations across more than 200 countries and territories, without having to cash out to a bank account or load money onto a dedicated crypto card.

The deal puts spending, rather than ownership, at the center of the effort: the companies are targeting the gap between the number of people who hold cryptocurrencies and the number who can practically use them at checkout.

Visa Opens Its 175 Million Merchant Network to Crypto Wallets

The integration draws on a distribution network of over 175 million Visa merchant locations in more than 200 countries and territories. A Visa payment credential works as a back-end layer: users can transact at regular contactless terminals or make purchases online, while Mesh handles the funding of each payment and the conversion of supported crypto, stablecoin, or fiat holdings where needed.

Merchants continue to receive payment through Visa's existing standard infrastructure, so enterprises will not need to buy dedicated crypto payment equipment or refit their checkout procedures to accept digital assets. Mesh, meanwhile, is responsible for funding, conversion, enrollment, and compliance on the payer side.

Mesh noted that it already has more than 200 enterprises plugged into its network of digital wallets, exchanges, and financial services, a footprint that positions it to route payments from participating platforms into Visa's acceptance network.

Crypto Spending Still Lags Behind Ownership

The partnership focuses on a major disconnect between the adoption of cryptocurrencies and the use of products built on them. Research cited by Mesh estimates that global cryptocurrency ownership will hit 774 million people by June 2026. By contrast, crypto card usage had only reached about $1.5 billion in monthly volume by late 2025. Measured against that projected holder base, the spending figure points to usage — not ownership — as the binding constraint on crypto's payments ambitions.

The gap underscores one of crypto payments' biggest hurdles: users can hold a substantial amount of digital assets yet lack an easy way to spend them on ordinary transactions. Bam Azizi, CEO and co-founder of Mesh, said the problem is essentially a "last-mile issue," and that people should not have to get an additional card or an account to use the funds they already have.

Mesh Handles Conversion, KYC and Payment Infrastructure

Participants on participating platforms will be able to integrate on top of Mesh instead of developing their own card-issuing and payment systems. Mesh will assume the role of a program manager, overseeing the onboarding of users, Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, transaction funding, and the conversion of assets between supported ones. The company has already partnered with several platforms, including Tools for Humanity, Kalshi, KAST, Majority, and Felix Pago.

Rather than having to create an alternative payments system, Visa was able to grant Mesh access to its global payment ecosystem, through which payment volume amounted to $14.2 trillion during fiscal 2025. In effect, digital-asset spending would ride the same acceptance rails as conventional card payments, with the crypto-specific work — funding, conversion, and compliance — handled upstream.

The partnership has not yet announced which wallets will be available first, which kinds of devices it will support, or when consumers will be able to access the capability — the near-term items to watch as the partnership moves from announcement to live availability.
