UniCredit is reportedly seeking a technology provider to help it build infrastructure for digital asset trading, custody and access to tokenized investment products.
The Italian bank’s discussions remain at an early stage, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg on Friday. Areas under consideration reportedly include crypto custody and brokerage capabilities, tokenized investment products, and fixed-income securities based on stablecoins.
UniCredit has not identified a technology provider for the proposed infrastructure. Cointelegraph has approached the bank for comment on the potential partnership.
The reported initiative comes as major banks continue experimenting with digital asset and stablecoin infrastructure. U.S. Bank, the fifth-largest commercial bank in the United States, completed a live cross-border payment using its proprietary USBDC stablecoin on Wednesday, according to Cointelegraph.
On Sept. 3, London-headquartered multinational bank Standard Chartered launched spot Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) trading for institutional clients in the United Arab Emirates. The bank had previously launched digital asset custody services in the region in September 2024, Cointelegraph reported.
In August, Leumi, Israel’s largest bank, partnered with Galaxy Digital to offer customers trading in Bitcoin, Ether and Solana (SOL) through the bank’s investment platform. The launch is expected in early 2027, according to Cointelegraph.
The developments reflect banks’ ongoing work on services involving cryptocurrency trading, digital asset custody, tokenization and stablecoins, without indicating that UniCredit has made a final decision or selected a partner. Confirmation from UniCredit, the identification of a technology provider or further details on the services under consideration would clarify the scope of the reported initiative.
