President Donald Trump has renewed his claims of vandalism in Washington, D.C., publishing a fresh accusation that, according to The New Republic, may have ended up "implicating himself."

In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump shared a photograph of a large patch of dead grass on the National Mall and once again blamed vandals.

"Look what VANDALS did to the grass connecting the vandalized World War II Monument and the vandalized Reflecting Pool, which will be opened again, and better than ever, shortly," the president wrote. "Anybody who thinks the Reflecting Pool wasn't vandalized should go back to Law School!"

The new accusation follows the collapse of Trump's earlier attempt to pin the Reflecting Pool remodeling fiasco on supposed left-wing vandalism.

In a Monday report, The New Republic pointed out that the dead grass sits in the same section of the National Mall where a massive stage was erected for the "Great American State Fair," the celebration held last month to coincide with the 250th anniversary festivities. By the outlet's account, the problem Trump highlighted was more than likely caused by his own July 4th event. That would fit a pattern familiar to the National Park Service, which maintains the Mall and has repeatedly rehabilitated its turf after large staged events, from inaugurations to Fourth of July crowds.

Trump's post also invoked a World War II monument he said was vandalized last week, after it was discovered covered in red and green paint along with "soapy bubbles." The New Republic noted that "U.S. Attorney Jeannine Pirro said felony charges are being brought against Melissa L. Farris" in connection with that alleged vandalism, "but the charging documents made no mention of the patch of dead grass on the lawn."

Pirro — a former Fox News host whom Trump installed as the District's top federal prosecutor — had previously drawn Trump's outrage after dismissing the criminal charges tied to the Reflecting Pool, with her office acknowledging in court that the problems there stemmed from the hasty remodeling project. With the vandalism narrative undercut by his own Justice Department, the open questions in the dispute are now largely procedural: how the felony case against Farris proceeds in D.C.'s federal court, and when the drained Reflecting Pool and the damaged turf around it will actually be restored.

"Regardless of Trump's apparent outrage, the president has demonstrated that he couldn't care less about protecting national landmarks — he's the one destroying them," the report added. "The president who cried vandalism has been behind a lot of the destruction at the National Mall. The Department of Justice concluded that Trump and his hand-picked contractors were responsible for the damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool that left the monument drained and surrounded by chain-link fences. Trump's federal contractors were also also responsible for cracking the fountain at the German-American Friendship Garden. Not to mention that across the country Trump is actively bulldozing Big Bend National Park in order to build his border wall."
