Two hosts of the podcast The Necessary Conversation confronted their mother, an avid supporter of President Donald Trump, during a Friday appearance on MS NOW, calling her a MAGA “cultist” to her face. Although Mary Lou maintained her support for Trump, she visibly stunned her children by acknowledging that she might not vote for him again if given the opportunity.

The segment featured Mary Lou and her children, Chad Kultgen and Hailey Pop, who discuss politics together on their podcast. Hailey directly challenged her mother’s political views.

“I believe that MAGA is a cult. She's wearing a Donald Trump hat – no other president in our history has had merch. This idea that he's never wrong; I'm going to wait and see what happens. This is cult mentality in my opinion,” Hailey said.

She added, “It's a slow go because you have to have patience to try to pull someone out of a cult.”

Chad offered a similar assessment, describing his mother’s support as “this weird kind of psychological programming.” He said she had bought Trump-branded cologne and sneakers while believing they might have “some kind of inherent financial value that will be imparted onto us as an inheritance.”

“Obviously that's not true,” Chad said. He suggested that the purchases allowed his mother to tell herself, “I’m not totally brainwashed in this cult. I'm doing this for good financial reasons. It's just not true.”

Mary Lou said she remained committed to Trump while acknowledging that her children had influenced her perspective.

“I voted for him. I want to continue to make our country stronger and greater. I do listen to my children. They are making me open my eyes a bit. But like I said, he is my president still,” she said.

Mary Lou also said she had gone nearly a year without speaking to her children after becoming “upset” over a meme her son created about Trump that she “didn’t like.” She said the estrangement ultimately was “not worth it” because “Family’s number one.”

Her children reacted with visible surprise when she was asked whether she would vote for Trump again. “I don't think he'll try, but… I would have to see who he was running against,” she replied.

“I'll be honest there. I mean, politics changes day by day. President Trump just said Iran is getting ready to fold. Day by day, our headlines change. That's what's so neat about politics to me.”
