President Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general is not merely a “yes-man,” former Department of Homeland Security chief of staff Miles Taylor wrote in a column Tuesday. Taylor, who worked inside the White House during Trump’s first term and later wrote under the pseudonym “Anonymous,” said Todd Blanche has been willing to compromise his own profession and reputation to serve Trump.

Blanche, who is likely to be confirmed on Thursday, “has already endured humiliation after humiliation in order to protect his boss,” Taylor wrote. He added that Blanche is poised to become “arguably the most powerful lawyer on earth” if confirmed to lead the U.S. Department of Justice, a role that would put him in charge of federal prosecutors, criminal investigations and the department’s response to politically sensitive matters.

Taylor argued that if Blanche loses the confirmation fight, it would mark another Trump setback. If he is confirmed, Taylor said, the job itself could destroy Blanche and show “how far Trump will go if he is unrestrained.”

One of the major flashpoints surrounding Blanche is his role in the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. As the senior Justice Department official overseeing the files, Blanche has faced criticism for a flawed rollout that exposed the names and images of survivors while leaving many powerful figures redacted. This week, a federal judge rejected the Justice Department’s explanation and ordered Blanche to turn over unreleased documents directly to the court.

Blanche has also come under scrutiny for personally flying to interview convicted trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s co-conspirator. Soon after that meeting, Maxwell was transferred to a prison “camp,” a significantly less restrictive setting.

The confirmation process has also drawn attention to Blanche’s written testimony. In more than 400 pages of answers to the Senate Judiciary Committee, he declined to respond to more than 160 questions, calling them “inappropriate.” One such question asked whether he would revive a controversial “anti-weaponization” fund if directed by the president. Two Republican holdouts are pressing him to commit in writing that he will not offer sweetheart deals to Trump, but he has not done so.

More than 1,200 former Justice Department officials from both parties have urged the Senate to reject Blanche, citing a “culture of fear” and questioning his fidelity to the Constitution. His supporters, by contrast, have gathered fewer than 80 names in response.

Taylor said Blanche has become Trump’s personal criminal defense lawyer and stood beside him when Trump became the first U.S. president convicted of a felony. Now, as Blanche moves closer to the nation’s top law enforcement post, critics say he may serve as a legal shield for an administration already facing an extensive judicial record.

Taylor also pointed to former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, who went to prison, and Rudy Giuliani, who was disbarred and bankrupted after working for the president.

“Todd Blanche stood beside Donald Trump as a defense lawyer. He’s hoping to be rewarded for that loyalty,” Taylor said. “The question that should keep him up at night is simpler than any a senator has asked: When the reckoning comes — for everything he’ll be asked to do on Trump’s behalf — who will stand beside Todd Blanche?”
