Tether Reports $1.5 Billion Q2 Profit as Reserve Buffer Shrinks by Half

Tether, the issuer of USDT and the world's largest stablecoin by market capitalization, reported $1.5 billion in net operating profit for the second quarter of 2026, driven primarily by returns on its U.S. Treasury and repurchase agreement holdings. USDT underpins a significant share of global crypto trading liquidity, serving as a primary settlement asset across centralized exchanges and decentralized finance platforms.

Despite the strong quarterly profit, the company's excess reserve buffer—the cushion separating Tether's total assets from its token redemption liabilities—declined by approximately half. According to the BDO attestation released Friday, Tether held $187.75 billion in total assets against $183.64 billion in liabilities as of June 30, leaving $4.11 billion in excess reserves. That figure is down from just over $8.23 billion three months earlier. The narrowing occurred because mark-to-market declines on Tether's gold and bitcoin holdings offset operating income gains, even as revenue from Treasury and repo holdings remained robust.

During the quarter, Tether expanded its physical gold holdings by 14 metric tons, bringing its total to approximately 146.2 metric tons, up from 132.2 tons. However, the value of those gold holdings fell to $18.84 billion from $19.84 billion, as the price of gold declined roughly 15% to just over $4,000 per ounce during the period.

The company also increased its bitcoin reserves by approximately 1,796 coins, raising its total holdings to 98,933 BTC. The valuation of those bitcoin holdings dropped to $5.80 billion from $6.62 billion, reflecting a decline in the bitcoin price used in the report to $58,600 from $68,200. Together, the repricing of gold and bitcoin accounted for the bulk of the reserve buffer compression.

Tether's USDT issuance rose by approximately $446 million during the quarter, bringing the total outstanding to $184.6 billion. The modest issuance growth contrasts with prior quarters of rapid expansion, reflecting steadier demand for stablecoin liquidity.
