Tether's Mining Development Kit Gains Industry Support to Advance Bitcoin Mining Automation

Tether is broadening its digital asset strategy along two parallel fronts: stablecoin payments and Bitcoin mining infrastructure. The company led a pre-seed funding round — among the earliest stages of startup financing — in Bolivian fintech Peso to expand financial services powered by USD₮, Tether's US dollar–pegged stablecoin, across Latin America. In a separate initiative, 15 mining industry participants have committed to building integrations for Tether's open-source Mining Development Kit (MDK). Together, the two efforts are intended to increase stablecoin utility in everyday transactions, improve interoperability across mining infrastructure, and support the development of AI-driven applications across the digital asset industry.

15 Industry Participants Commit to Bitcoin Mining MDK

Tether has secured commitments from 15 industry participants — including mining operators, ASIC manufacturers, and mining pools — to build and maintain integrations with its Mining Development Kit, according to the company's official announcement. ASICs, or application-specific integrated circuits, are the specialized chips at the core of modern Bitcoin mining hardware, while mining pools coordinate computing power from many individual miners.

The MDK framework is an open-source solution designed to address the fragmentation that has come to characterize mining infrastructure. Large facilities are likely to run devices produced by many different manufacturers, with pool connections and software management handled separately for each system.

Under the framework, each participant will develop an MDK worker — effectively a translator that bridges the gap between its existing hardware and software and a standard interface. This approach allows developers to create applications that work across different systems without needing a different integration solution for each vendor. Businesses retain full control of their own technology and reveal only those features they choose to expose through the common interface. The more participants that join the framework and develop their workers, the simpler mining becomes, as each new worker extends the range of systems that standard applications can reach.

QVAC Agent Supports AI-Driven Mining Automation

In addition to these objectives, MDK is intended to facilitate the creation of AI solutions that can observe machines, detect issues in operations, and enhance the efficiency of mining activities. However, poor communication channels between systems may hamper the capacity of AI agents to handle fleets of machines. Fleet-scale automation, in other words, hinges on the same standardization problem the worker model is built to solve.

“We are entering a period where software will increasingly operate physical infrastructure, not simply report on it,” said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether. “That does not work at scale if every machine speaks a different language. Mining is one of the clearest examples of this problem today. MDK gives companies a way to keep control of their own technology while creating the common foundation developers and autonomous systems need to work across.”

According to the company, QVAC, its mining software, can already be used directly on MDK — an illustration of how artificial intelligence software and mining hardware can through a shared platform.

The project is currently in its initial phase. Wider implementation of the system will require additional integrations and more applications built on the platform.

MDK 1.0 Release Targeted for Year-End 2026

The company aims to unveil MDK 0.11 at the upcoming Plan ₿ Forum event in Lugano, Switzerland, on October 23–24, 2026, and to release the first stable 1.0 version by the end of 2026. The framework is already available for developers to experiment with integration and application development.

Tether Invests in Peso to Expand USD₮ Payments

On October 21, 2026, Tether announced its financial support for Peso as the Bolivian fintech expands to Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina. Peso provides an international account denominated in USD₮ that allows users to save, spend, invest, and transfer money across borders from a single app.

In Bolivia, customers can pay for food purchases through Yango using USD₮. Peso also facilitates merchants' point-of-sale (POS) transactions and virtual accounts linked to the country's financial system via QR codes and automated clearing house (ACH) rails.

The funds will be allocated toward local ramps, payment solutions for merchants, and infrastructure for virtual accounts. This will make it easier to move from stablecoins into local currencies and make digital dollar transactions more convenient. That bridge layer matters because stablecoins circulate on blockchain rails, while day-to-day commerce in the region runs on local currencies and local banking systems.

Paolo Ardoino, Tether's chief executive, said the investment helps realize the company's vision of stablecoins being practical in daily use cases. Going forward, Peso will concentrate on extending its payment network and merchant acceptance capabilities across Latin America.

Stablecoin Payments and Mining Infrastructure Advance in Tandem

Tether's involvement in the Peso and MDK projects addresses two distinct problems within the digital asset industry. Peso is focused on increasing the usage of USD₮ for everyday transactions, whereas MDK aims to make the mining process more compatible across vendors and to introduce AI automation. The success of both projects will depend on adoption and usage — for MDK, on committed integrations materializing as live workers and applications, and for Peso, on merchant acceptance and account activity across its launch markets.
