Swiss Regulator FINMA Approves Switzerland's First Bitcoin ETF for Retail Investors

Switzerland's financial markets regulator, FINMA, has approved the country's first bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) for retail investors. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority said on Tuesday that the decision comes as people in Switzerland express a growing interest in cryptocurrency — particularly bitcoin.

Bitcoin ETFs, particularly in the United States, have widened the scope of investors who can buy and sell the leading cryptocurrency. Through shares that trade on a stock exchange, investors can gain exposure to the largest cryptocurrency in a safe and regulated way, without needing to handle the asset directly.

FINMA noted that it has prior experience with crypto investment vehicles. "As early as 2021, FINMA authorised a fund for qualified investors that invests primarily in a basket of cryptocurrencies," the announcement read.

The authority also explained its reasoning for relaxing its usual requirements for the new product.

"As Bitcoin has a long trading history and a particularly high trading volume compared with other cryptocurrencies, FINMA has approved an exemption from the applicable risk diversification rules in this case."

Risk diversification rules are a common safeguard in fund regulation, generally requiring products to spread exposure across multiple assets or issuers to limit concentration risk — a constraint a fund built around a single asset cannot satisfy on its own.

It added: "At the same time, FINMA emphasises that investments in Bitcoin — even through an approved ETF — remain highly risky."

The announcement did not reveal which asset manager or bank will debut the product, leaving the issuer's identity, the fund's listing venue, and its launch timing to be confirmed. Switzerland already has crypto ETFs on the market, but these are limited to institutional or qualified investors; with the approval, retail investors in Switzerland gain the same exchange-traded route to bitcoin exposure that their U.S. counterparts have had since 2024.

the U.S., bitcoin ETFs had the most successful debut in the history of investment vehicles when they were approved in 2024. Traders, institutions, and retail investors can now quickly buy shares that track the price of the leading cryptocurrency without worrying about exchanges or the storage of the digital coin.

Those funds, managed by Wall Street giants such as BlackRock, Fidelity, and Morgan Stanley, oversee more than $97 billion in assets, according to CoinGlass data.
