Strategy and Strive Announce $182.7 Million Bitcoin Buy as Price Surges Past $86,000

Bitcoin treasury companies — publicly listed firms that hold bitcoin on their balance sheets — kicked off the week with a bang on Monday, September 21, as Strategy and Strive each announced fresh purchases totaling a combined 2,305 BTC for $182.7 million.

Strategy said in a filing that it bought 950 bitcoins for $75.7 million last week — its first purchase since August, according to an official press release. Strive, meanwhile, snapped up 1,355 BTC for $107.7 million.

The announcements come as the price of the biggest cryptocurrency surges. Bitcoin's price recently stood at $86,008, a 6% rise over the past 24 hours, after climbing as high as $86,282 earlier on Monday.

Strategy, the biggest corporate holder of bitcoin, also repurchased $174 million of its STRC perpetual preferred shares, a class of equity separate from its common stock. The company hit pause on its bitcoin buying earlier this year in order to focus on repurchasing its own stock and building a cash reserve. On some occasions, the company even sold small bits of its BTC stash — despite founder and chairman Michael Saylor famously preaching to “never sell your bitcoin.”

After a 10-week hiatus, the company began buying bitcoin again in the final week of August, scooping up nearly $370 million worth of the leading cryptocurrency in a single week. Its total bitcoin holdings now stand at 846,000 coins — worth $72.7 billion at today's prices.

Strive, for its part, has continued its purchases every single week, steadily climbing up the rankings of companies holding bitcoin. The Nasdaq-listed company is now the fifth-biggest corporate holder of the cryptocurrency, with 26,355 BTC worth $2.2 billion.

Strategy's stock (NASDAQ: MSTR) was trading 8% higher on Monday. Strive (NASDAQ: ASST) was trading slightly lower, but on Friday it rose above $30 per share — beating most of the price targets set by Wall Street analysts.

The broader bitcoin treasury sector has had a rough 2026. Strategy, Satsuma, Smarter Web Company, Sequans, Nakamoto, and Empery Digital have all sold bitcoin this year to repay debt, fund operations, or finance buybacks, while others have folded or pivoted to AI infrastructure as their share prices collapsed. Against that backdrop, fresh accumulation by two of the sector's largest corporate holders underscores the divide between companies still building their bitcoin treasuries and those selling, folding, or pivoting away.

Bitcoin's Monday surge came despite a setback on the legislative front, with the Clarity Act — a key piece of crypto legislation — getting blocked last week. The Federal Reserve also raised interest rates, but investors have shrugged off the central bank's move. Whether the Clarity Act advances after last week's block, and whether Strategy maintains its renewed buying pace, are among the developments to watch in the treasury-company sector going forwardn
The coin's price now sits more than 30% below the all-time high of $126,080 that it reached in October.
