Strategy Repurchases $139 Million of Preferred Stock Instead of Buying Bitcoin

Strategy, the Nasdaq-listed bitcoin treasury company, did not purchase bitcoin last week and instead repurchased $139 million of its preferred stock, STRC.

A filing submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday showed that Strategy bought back 1.42 million STRC preferred shares for approximately $139.3 million between September 8 and September 13. The transaction directed capital toward repurchasing preferred shares rather than adding to the company’s bitcoin holdings, providing a snapshot of its capital allocation during the latest reporting period.

The company continues to hold 845,050 bitcoins, valued at $66.2 billion at current prices. It also reported two cash balances: $5.1 billion in USD Reserve and $1.3 billion in USD Cash.

Strategy, the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, has shifted this year from its previous pattern of regularly purchasing the cryptocurrency to buying back its stock and building a cash reserve. On some occasions, the company also sold small portions of its bitcoin holdings, despite founder and chairman Michael Saylor’s well-known call to “never sell your bitcoin.”

After a 10-week pause, Strategy resumed bitcoin purchases during the final week of August, acquiring nearly $370 million worth of the cryptocurrency. It has not reported another bitcoin purchase since then.

Shares of Strategy, which trade under the ticker MSTR, were up 3% on Monday. The stock has fallen more than 75% from its record high in November 2024, one month before bitcoin crossed the long-anticipated $100,000 level.

The company, formerly known as MicroStrategy, is an enterprise software business that began buying and holding bitcoin in 2020. It initially purchased the cryptocurrency as a hedge against inflation for shareholders, but later expanded its strategy and repositioned itself as a bitcoin treasury company.

Strategy has defended its recent bitcoin sales. Chief Executive Officer Phong Le said the company now has a “bullet-proof balance sheet.” In its quarterly earnings report in July, Strategy recorded an $8.22 billion loss, but Le said the company’s current paper loss was not a cause for concern.

“We’re the J.P. Morgan of the crypto economy, so whether we sell 1,000 bitcoin out of 840,000 to me is irrelevant to the conversation,” Le said in a subsequent interview.
