Electric mobility company Spiro has appointed Huy Chieu as its new Chief Development Officer (CDO). A former programme engineering manager at General Motors, Chieu brings nearly three decades of global automotive and electric vehicle experience to the African EV manufacturer, with expertise spanning vehicle engineering, product development, manufacturing, supply chain optimisation, and operational scale-up.

Throughout his career, Chieu has held positions at General Motors, VinFast, and Hero MotoCorp, working across North America, China, India, Southeast Asia, and Europe. He has led large engineering organisations, developed vehicle platforms covering internal combustion, hybrid, and electric technologies, and delivered complex, high-volume vehicle programmes from concept through to market launch.

In his new role as CDO, Chieu will oversee Spiro's end-to-end product development and operationalisation. He will support the company as it strengthens its product portfolio, engineering capabilities, manufacturing footprint, and supply chain across Africa. He reports directly to Spiro Group CEO Anant Badjatya.

Commenting on his appointment, Chieu said: "Spiro has built a unique electric mobility platform with the ambition and scale to transform transportation across Africa. Appointment Comes at a Pivotal Growth Stage

Spiro currently has more than 120,000 electric motorcycles on the road, operates over 2,500 battery-swapping stations, and has completed more than 47 million battery swaps to date. The company continues to scale its operations and deepen the localisation of its value chain as it builds an increasingly integrated electric mobility ecosystem across the continent, making product development and manufacturing execution more central as the network expands.

The appointment follows Spiro's latest funding round, in which the electric motorcycle manufacturer raised a total of $270 million.
