Solana to Activate Alpenglow on Mainnet Oct. 21, Cutting Finality From 12.8 Seconds to 150 Milliseconds
Key Takeaways
- •Alpenglow will cut Solana's transaction finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to a target near milliseconds when it activates on October 21 at approximately 15:00 UTC.
- •Unlike the outgoing system, which fails if more than about a third of staked SOL turns hostile, the new design can continue finalizing with 20% of stake malicious and a further 20% offline.
- •Validator votes will no longer be recorded as on-chain transactions, so Solana's headline transaction count and TPS are expected to drop sharply without any change in real network usage.
- •Alpenglow is the first of two upgrade phases, and the second phase remains unscheduled following the postponement of an earlier September 28 activation.
- •Crypto majors sold off 3–5% after a hot CPI reading lifted rate-hike odds, with more than $900 million in long positions liquidated over 24 hours.

Solana will activate its Alpenglow upgrade on mainnet on October 21 at approximately 15:00 UTC, retiring the consensus mechanism the network has operated since launch. The change cuts transaction finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to a target of about 150 milliseconds — an 85-fold improvement. Anza, the core development firm behind the upgrade, called it "18 months of work for a migration that happens in one slot" (a slot on Solana lasts roughly 400 milliseconds).
Finality is the point at which a transaction stops being reversible — the moment goods can change hands knowing the payment cannot be clawed back. Solana has always felt instant to users, but a window of roughly 13 seconds remained in which a block could, in theory, still be dropped. Every exchange and payment processor has had to build around that window. Next week, it closes.
The outgoing system breaks if more than about a third of staked SOL turns hostile. The new design is built to keep finalizing even if 20% of stake acts maliciously and another 20% is simply offline. Decrypt's Morning Minute newsletter, written by Tyler Warner, noted that for a chain whose reputation was built on outages, that is the number institutions will actually care about.
One side effect is set to draw attention. Validators currently cast their votes as transactions on the chain, and those votes have long inflated Solana's headline transaction count and TPS figures. Under Alpenglow, validators will vote directly to one another instead, meaning Solana's reported transaction metrics are about to fall off a cliff. Nothing real changes — the same users, volume, and apps remain — but the number everyone has quoted for years was mostly validators voting at each other. Warner cautioned that the shift is likely to produce a wave of "Solana activity collapses" posts from people reading dashboards next Wednesday.
Alpenglow is also only phase one of a two-part upgrade, and the second piece has no date yet. Solana has missed an Alpenglow date before: a September 28 activation was announced, then pushed back.
The activation underlines Solana's focus on speed as one of its primary differentiators. The immediate watch items: whether the Oct. 21 date holds after September's pushback, and when the second phase gets a date.
Crypto Majors Fall 3–5% After Hot CPI
Crypto's major assets sold off 3–5% after a hot CPI reading sent rate-hike odds higher, with altcoins down 5–15%. Bitcoin fell 3% to $80,900, Ethereum dropped 6% to $2,360, Solana slid 5% to $102, HYPE lost 3% to $79, and ZEC fell 12% to $1,090. Top altcoin movers included PYTH (+3%) and CRV (+4%).
Over $900 million in crypto longs were liquidated over the past 24 hours, led by ETH and BTC.
In traditional markets, oil fell 1% to $95 and gold rose 0.2% to $4,180. U.S. stock futures were mixed ahead of PPI data, with Dow futures up 0.3% and Nasdaq futures down 1.1%.
