Bitcoin acceptance is spreading one counter at a time. Around the world, millions of persistent bitcoiners walk up to registers and ask the same four words: “Do you accept bitcoin?” Half the time, they already know the answer will be no. They ask anyway — partly because the look on a cashier's face when a stranger raises magic internet money over a $5 latte never gets old.

This year, the math shifted in their favor. In March 2026, Square began automatically switching on bitcoin acceptance for up to 4 million terminals, moving the feature from an opt-in tool to a default enrollment — a change that lets a counter start taking bitcoin without its owner ever shopping for a new payments setup. The rollout, however, has felt more like a trickle than a wave; plenty of Square terminals have yet to receive the update. In response, many bitcoiners have taken it upon themselves to accelerate adoption: walking into local shops, asking for the manager, and making the case for bitcoin payments. This series will track those wins, one business at a time — and how quickly the remaining terminals come online is one thread worth watching alongside them.

First Up: Shortwave Coffee

The Saint Louis area alone hosts an estimated 250 independent coffee shops, but one has earned unwavering loyalty from local bitcoiners.

Shortwave Coffee began in Missouri in 2014 as a small, family-run roastery. It has since grown to five locations across three states: two in Columbia, one in St. Louis, plus an outpost in Minneapolis and a roastery in Tampa. The company roasts its own beans and pulls a genuinely excellent shot of espresso. But the detail that won the loyalty of bitcoin's rank and file is simple: Shortwave takes bitcoin at the register. For customers, that reach means paying in bitcoin is not a one-counter novelty — it follows the roaster across Missouri, Minnesota, and Florida.

For several months, a group of local bitcoiners asked the baristas about bitcoin and emailed the company's general inbox multiple times before finally hearing yes in July 2026.

The St. Louis shop sits in the Central West End at 33 N. Sarah Street. It features a spacious indoor café with capacity for more than 75 people, an outdoor patio bordered by a wildflower garden, and ample street parking. Two hours west, Shortwave's original Columbia locations offer the same appeal: a modern build-out, a genuinely local feel, and bitcoin acceptance.

That, ultimately, is the thesis of this column: bitcoiners can choose to direct their spending toward top-caliber businesses. Shops that understand high-quality products and care about their customers tend to say yes when customers ask for bitcoin. Square is a great option for switching it on, but bitcoin does not discriminate.
