For context, Shanghai handled nearly 39,000 TEU more in one day than Denmark's Fredericia Container Terminal moved during the entirety of 2025. Fredericia's annual total of 164,968 TEU was itself a record for that facility. Shanghai's single-day volume also exceeded what Florida's Port Canaveral handles in a full year.
The record came on the heels of four days of disruption caused by Typhoon Bavi in mid-July. A large number of deepsea and feeder vessels arrived simultaneously after sheltering from the storm, placing significant pressure on berths, yards, and landside operations. Post-typhoon surge volumes have become a recurring operational challenge for major Asian hubs as vessel sizes and call concentrations grow.
Shanghai International Port Group reported that the port returned to full operations on July 14 and maintained an average daily throughput of approximately 172,000 TEU while clearing the accumulated vessel and container backlog.
Several individual terminals also set records during the recovery period. The automated Yangshan phase four terminal handled 29,910 TEU on August 1, while the Luojing container terminal processed 8,373 TEU. Yangshan phase IV, one of the world's largest fully automated container terminals, has been a key driver of Shanghai's capacity expansion since it began operations.
In the first six months of 2026, Shanghai handled more than 28 million TEU, representing a 6.2% year-on-year increase. Volumes at the Yangshan port area climbed 8.1% to exceed 15 million TEU. The growth rate outpaced global container throughput trends, which have been supported by resilient Asia–Europe and trans-Pacific trade lanes.
