Nymbus, a modern core banking platform for U.S. banks and credit unions, has announced that Sagehaven Bancorp (in formation) has selected the company as the technology foundation for its proposed digital-centric national bank, which will be headquartered in Pittsburgh's Strip District.
Sagehaven was founded by three banking and corporate-finance executives with decades of sophisticated banking experience: Brian Tabb, CEO and former SVP of Finance in Corporate Treasury at BNY; Angelo Innamorato, EVP/COO and former VP at Huntington National Bank and Director at BNY; and Jared Leland, EVP/Chief Counsel and former Director and Corporate-Finance Attorney at Houston Harbaugh. The company filed its application for a national charter with the OCC and FDIC in July 2026, and the charter review for approval is currently in progress.
If approved, Sagehaven is positioned to become Pittsburgh's first startup, de novo bank in nearly 20 years. De novo charters have been relatively rare in the United States in recent years, with new bank formations running well below pre-2008 levels, which makes any proposed de novo a notable event for its local market. The bank will focus on small-to-mid market companies and mid-to-high-net-worth consumers — segments its founders believe are often underserved by traditional platforms or undervalued by large banking conglomerates.
To bring that vision to market, Sagehaven partnered with Nymbus, whose cloud-native banking platform unifies core processing, account opening, digital banking, and managed services, helping institutions launch, operate, and grow with speed. For a startup bank without legacy infrastructure, the choice of core platform is a foundational decision: it determines how quickly the institution can open accounts, deliver digital services, and scale operations. Increasingly, banks and credit unions have looked to modern core providers as an alternative to the decades-old systems that still run much of the U.S. banking industry. The technology will enable Sagehaven to operate a single Pittsburgh-based branch while giving businesses and consumers nationwide the ability to fully manage their banking needs digitally once the bank is chartered and open for business.
"We set out to build a bank that pairs sophistication and resiliency with security, and that meant choosing a technology partner that could help us launch, manage demand, and securely transact banking needs and interests fluidly while enhancing the customer experience," said Brian Tabb, President and CEO of the proposed Sagehaven Bancorp. "Nymbus gives us the speed, flexibility, oversight, and digital framework to efficiently and securely serve businesses and individuals nationally in our tech-centric world."
Sagehaven anticipates a regulatory review period following the July 2026 charter application, after which it aims to raise capital, secure final approval, and begin banking operations in April 2027. The timeline ahead — capital raise, final regulatory approval, and launch — remains contingent on the OCC and FDIC review process.
"This is exactly the kind of institution the market needs more of: an experienced team building something new to serve businesses and clients who want a real banking relationship," said Jeffery Kendall, Chairman and CEO of Nymbus. "Sagehaven doesn't have to choose between high-touch service and modern technology. We're giving them both from day one, so they can launch fast and compete without compromise."
