Real-world asset (RWA) perpetual futures are becoming more established in crypto markets, with decentralized-exchange (DEX) trading volume rising by nearly 75% since August. New platforms are contributing to that growth and challenging providers that previously led activity on Hyperliquid.
In October, RWA perpetual futures extended a seven-week growth streak. Weekly volume on decentralized markets increased from $22.8 billion to $39.8 billion, a 74.7% rise compared with the final week of August.
Competition among RWA trading providers has also intensified. TradeXYZ recorded $12.73 billion in volume during the past week but has surrendered market share to Variational. Since early September, Variational’s share of total RWA perpetual futures trading has increased from 10.6% to 32%, making venue-level market share and open interest the figures to watch as that contest develops.
RWA trading has helped offset some of the slowdown across perpetual futures markets, where activity frequently rotates among crypto, equities and commodities. As Cryptopolitan reported, perpetual futures have become one of the main use cases for on-chain activity. Ripple recently announced its own on-chain RWA perpetual futures swaps, according to Cryptopolitan.
DEX-based RWA perpetual futures provide crypto-native and international traders with direct access to markets linked to non-crypto assets, from indexes and selected equities to commodities such as gold and oil. Their expansion has occurred alongside the rapid growth of tokenization, which is creating spot markets for selected assets. Perpetual futures — derivative contracts that carry no fixed expiry date — also provide additional venues for leveraged positions on top of those spot markets.
RWA perpetual futures remain a developing sector
RWA perpetual futures trading is still evolving, and users continue to move among available markets. The sector remains unregulated for now, with limited exclusion lists and near-complete anonymity — a profile that contrasts with the identity and compliance checks customary in traditional finance venues.
TradeXYZ holds more than $1.9 billion in open interest, representing a significant portion Hyperliquid’s $7.8 billion total. Variational, its current competitor, reports $2 billion in total open interest across 550 markets. TradeXYZ’s open interest has declined from its August peak of $2.15 billion, although other trackers place the figure at approximately $3.6 billion.
Overall RWA perpetual futures open interest is estimated at $3.8 billion using methods associated with Dune Analytics. Approximately $1.9 billion is used as collateral in decentralized protocols. DEX-based RWA perpetual futures remain considerably smaller than centralized markets, where open interest exceeds $215 billion — a gap that underlines how early-stage the decentralized segment remains. Most of that centralized-market activity, however, is concentrated in crypto contracts.
As of 2026, on-chain infrastructure is used primarily by crypto-native participants. RWA perpetual futures and tokenization have not yet been adopted as official rails for traditional finance, although wider institutional use is viewed as an optimistic possibility for the industry.
RWA perpetual futures also contribute to fee generation. Hyperliquid records 101.5K active daily addresses, with approximately 10K trading RWA contracts. RWA trading remains a developing use case, with activity expected by the source to continue growing in the coming months.
RWA perpetual futures add liquidity to tokenized markets
Growth in RWA perpetual futures across DEXs and centralized markets is important to the broader adoption of RWAs.
Ethereum, Solana and BNB Chain remain the leaders by the stated value of tokenized assets. Solana’s tokenized value increased from $1 billion in 2025 to $4.37 billion in October, with liquidity coming from XStocks trading on selected markets. Data on the broader RWA market is also tracked by DefiLlama.
The Hyperliquid ecosystem remains a leading venue for on-chain trading and for liquidity from large traders and crypto-native participants. HIP-3, Hyperliquid’s RWA perpetual futures hub, also reflects broader trends in the RWA market. As of October 16, the platform had again focused on indexes and selected equities, while activity in gold and oil also increased — making its listing mix a running indicator of which real-world assets are attracting on-chain activity.
