A previous cross-border incident in November 2022, when a missile landed in the Polish village of Przewodów near the Ukrainian border killing two people, underscored the dangers of spillover; that strike was later assessed by NATO and Polish investigators as likely caused by a Ukrainian air-defense interceptor rather than a Russian missile.

Multiple reports indicated that Russian cruise missiles struck the Lviv region, causing damage to residential buildings. The full extent of casualties and destruction was not immediately clear. Russia has periodically targeted infrastructure across Ukraine, including energy facilities and supply lines, as part of its long-range strike campaign.
