Romanian F-16 fighters have destroyed an explosive-laden maritime drone in the Black Sea just a few hundred meters from the Neptun Deep natural gas project — the second drone incursion into Romanian airspace in less than a week, and the latest in a series of confrontations accompanying NATO operations along the alliance's eastern flank.

The developments were reported by analyst Olga Lautman in commentary published on Econbrowser on August 22, 2026. According to her account, NATO continued unannounced operations along the eastern flank for the third day in a row, with alliance forces operating around Kaliningrad, Poland, the Baltic states, and stretching to Moldova — a "show of force" intended to warn Russia against attacking a NATO country even as Moscow kept escalating.

Romania, a NATO member since 2004, had already dealt with a drone entering its airspace during Russia's "massive and deadly" overnight attack on Ukraine when another appeared just hours later. This time it was a maritime drone in the Black Sea, spotted only a few hundred meters from the Neptun Deep gas project. Romania scrambled two F-16s, and video captured the moment one of the jets opened fire and hit the drone, which officials later confirmed was carrying explosives. The F-16s now anchoring Romania's air defenses reflect a fleet modernization that saw Bucharest buy second-hand jets from Portugal and later Norway, fully retiring its Soviet-era MiG-21 interceptors in 2023.

The location matters: Neptun Deep is one of Europe's largest new natural gas projects and is expected to make Romania the EU's largest gas producer when it comes online. The offshore development, located roughly 160 kilometers off the Romanian coast, is being carried out by OMV Petrom together with the Romanian state company Romgaz. Its significance has grown as the EU has worked since 2022 to cut its dependence on Russian pipeline gas — and the Black Sea itself has become a theater of naval drone warfare since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with both Russia and Ukraine using maritime drones against ships and port infrastructure.

Just four days before the latest engagement, another drone had entered Romanian airspace and was shot down by a Spanish F-18 conducting a NATO air policing mission. Romanian territory has been touched by the war before: drone fragments have repeatedly been found along the Danube border region since Russia stepped up strikes on Ukrainian port facilities across the river beginning in 2023, and Romania has since hosted a NATO multinational battlegroup at the Mihail Kogălniceanu base near the Black Sea coast as part of the alliance's reinforcement of its southeastern flank.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan took to X to thank the Romanian Armed Forces and pilots for destroying the drone and blamed Russia for the incident. He condemned what he called an "intensification" of these incidents by Russia and said Romania would remain vigilant alongside its NATO allies to "repel such challenges."
