RoadOne expands Port of Charleston operations with Higgins Transport Service acquisition

RoadOne IntermodaLogistics announced that it has acquired Higgins Transport Service, a Charleston, South Carolina-based provider of port drayage and intermodal transportation services.

The transaction adds 15 drivers to RoadOne’s Charleston operations, along with additional drayage and intermodal capacity for the Southeastern market. Financial terms were not disclosed.

RoadOne recently opened a 384,000-square-foot facility in Summerville, South Carolina, to support the Port of Charleston. The 100-acre property provides transloading, storage and distribution services across the Southeast. The company plans to add a 279,700-square-foot warehouse on the site next year.

RoadOne said it directly operates nearly 5 million square feet of warehouse and transloading space and has access to another 85 million square feet through partnerships. The expansion adds to the company’s logistics footprint in a market where port access, warehouse space and drayage capacity are closely linked, especially for cargo moving through the Port of Charleston and across the broader Southeast.

“The addition of Higgins Transport Service strengthens our commitment to providing unmatched service throughout the Southeast global trade corridor and supporting all of our customers’ supply chain needs,” said JC Carruthers, executive vice president at RoadOne.

Based in Randolph, Massachusetts, RoadOne describes itself as a single source for intermodal, drayage, warehouse and logistics services. The asset-based provider says it has more than 2,500 drivers at over 100 port, railroad and truckload terminals across the U.S. RoadOne is backed by Ridgemont Equity Partners and Nonantum Capital Partners.

“We are proud to have built an operation that attracted a partner like RoadOne, and we are excited about what the future holds as we leverage RoadOne’s national platform to serve our clients and drive future growth,” said Justin Higgins, owner of Higgins Transport.

The deal underscores an ongoing trend of consolidation and infrastructure expansion in major port markets. For shippers and logistics operators, such moves can reshape service coverage and capacity planning without changing the underlying trade flows they serve. It also broadens RoadOne’s port drayage capabilities and wider supply chain services across the Southeast global trade corridor.
