Ripple USD (RLUSD), the stablecoin issued on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), is gaining traction in the emerging field of agentic payments following a series of protocol integrations and exchange listings. Agentic payments refer to transactions initiated and completed autonomously by AI agents on behalf of users or businesses — a category that has drawn interest from major payment networks and cloud providers as AI-driven commerce expands.

Chandler Fang, co-founder of t54ai — a company focused on building an agentic economy on the XRP Ledger — highlighted RLUSD's growing role in the sector. According to Fang, RLUSD natively supports the x402 protocol as well as mainstream agentic payment protocols developed by Google and Mastercard, positioning it to unlock access to hundreds of agentic merchants and services, with the potential to reach millions in the future.

Fang's remarks follow RLUSD's recent listings on major South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges Upbit and Bithumb, which came after earlier listings on Coinone and Korbit. South Korea consistently ranks among the world's largest retail cryptocurrency trading markets, and broad exchange availability there can significantly expand a token's accessible liquidity and user base.

XRPL AI Starter Kit and Protocol Support

In June, Ripple launched the XRPL AI Starter Kit, a suite of tools and integrations designed to help developers build agentic payment applications on the XRP Ledger. The kit includes support for X402-powered payments using XRP and RLUSD, enabling AI agents to transact for APIs, compute resources, and other digital services. The x402 standard builds on HTTP status code 402 ("Payment Required"), repurposing it to enable HTTP-native, machine-to-machine payments so that AI agents can pay for resources without traditional checkout flows or account creation.

Agent payments on the XRPL now also support Mastercard's Verifiable Intent standard. The standard is aligned with Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and is designed to be protocol-agnostic. Verifiable Intent creates a tamper-resistant record of what a user authorized when an AI agent acts on their behalf, establishing a shared source of truth across the payment ecosystem.

RLUSD's Role in Agentic Payments

RLUSD serves a practical function in agentic payments, as many agentic workflows require price stability for use cases such as invoice settlement, payroll processing, and agent-to-agent commerce. The same transaction primitives that transfer XRP on the ledger also support RLUSD, and the stablecoin can be exchanged for other assets through the XRPL decentralized exchange (DEX). Additionally, RLUSD offers utility for AI agents that need to denominate value in U.S. dollars and for workflows where issuer credibility and regulatory compliance are important considerations.

Nuvion Integration and x402 Foundation Membership

Earlier in July, Nuvion — an AI-powered global banking and cross-border payments platform built on fiat and stablecoins for businesses and fintechs — announced the integration of RLUSD into its infrastructure platform.

Ripple has also joined the Linux Foundation's x402 Foundation alongside Visa, Mastercard, Google, Amazon Web Services, and 35 other organizations to develop an open payment standard for AI agents and internet applications. The breadth of that membership — spanning card networks, cloud infrastructure providers, and blockchain firms — signals cross-industry coordination around interoperability for machine-initiated payments, a space where competing proprietary standards could otherwise fragment adoption.
