Revolut Says Customers' Money and Data Are Safe as Google Cloud Outage Disrupts Payments

Revolut has moved to reassure customers unable to make card payments, transfers or ATM withdrawals that their money and data are safe, after a Google Cloud outage knocked out several of the digital bank's core services on Tuesday.

The failure landed exactly one year to the day after an Amazon Web Services outage knocked Coinbase, Robinhood and Lloyds Bank offline.

Revolut, one of the world's largest financial technology companies, reports more than 80 million personal customers and over 800,000 business accounts, including roughly 13 million users in Britain.

What happened to Revolut?

The London-based digital bank acknowledged the problems in an X post, telling customers that their “money and data are safe” and confirming that engineers were already working to fix “a service disruption affecting multiple services.”

We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services. We can confirm that all our customers' money and data are safe. We've been working to fix the issue since it was identified this morning and apologise to anyone affected and for any inconvenience…

The disruption hit everyday banking functions, leaving some customers unable to pay by card, top up accounts, move money or sign in to the app.

The outage has been traced back to Google Cloud, with BigQuery, App Engine, Cloud SQL and Firestore among the affected services. Google flagged multiple failing services in its europe-west2 region, which serves London, on its service health dashboard, with the incident beginning at 23:08 PDT on Monday, October 19 — early Tuesday morning in the United Kingdom.

The episode is a reminder that many consumer-facing financial platforms run their core services on third-party hyperscale cloud infrastructure, so a fault in a single cloud region — in this case the one serving London — can interrupt everyday banking functions for a large user base.

Revolut's system status page listed 28 services as partially unavailable at the time of reporting, including card payments, bank card top-ups, transfers, ATM withdrawals, sign-in and premium features.

Downdetector, a platform that tracks user-reported outages, recorded more than 1,500 reports from Revolut users. The company did not say how many customers were affected or when full service would return. Downtime reports for Lloyds Bank have also spiked.

A year to the day after the AWS crash

On October 20, 2025, an Amazon Web Services outage centered on its US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia knocked Canva, Zoom, Coinbase, Robinhood, Venmo, Lloyds Bank and Amazon's own Alexa and Ring services offline. During that episode, Coinbase users could not log in, place orders or withdraw funds on their mobile apps.

Taken together, the two episodes show how a disruption at a single cloud region can take a wide range of consumer platforms offline at once — from banks and trading apps to productivity tools.

Until Revolut and Google confirm full restoration, the bank's system status page and Google's service health dashboard are the places to track progress and any fuller explanation of what went wrong.

The latest outage also comes a month after Revolut disclosed a data breach in which hackers demanded $3 million.
