Jerrold Tarog's 'Quezon' Leads 49th Gawad Urian with 10 Nominations

Jerrold Tarog's film Quezon leads the nominees for the 49th Gawad Urian with 10 nominations, the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino announced on Tuesday.

Produced by TBA Studios, Quezon is a historical drama about Philippine president Manuel L. Quezon and the third and final installment of the so-called "Bayaniverse" film trilogy, following Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral. The earlier entries in the trilogy were themselves major players at past Urian ceremonies, with Heneral Luna having dominated the 39th edition in 2016. Beyond its Best Picture nod, the film was nominated in nearly every category: Direction, Screenplay, Production Design, Cinematography, Editing, Music, and Sound.

It also earned two acting nominations: Jericho Rosales for Best Actor, having played Quezon himself, and Iain Glen — best known internationally for his role as Jorah Mormont in Game of Thrones — for Best Supporting Actor in the role of Governor-General Leonard Wood.

Close behind, with eight nominations each, are fellow Best Picture contenders Sunshine, directed by Antoinette Jadaone, and Cinemartyrs, directed by Sari Dalena. Bar Boys: After School and Bloom Where You Are Planted round out the Best Picture race. Among the supporting actress nominees is Dolly de Leon, whose international profile rose after her performance in the 2022 film Triangle of Sadness.

The organizers have yet to announce this year's lifetime achievement awardee. The awards ceremony is scheduled for October, with the exact date and venue to be confirmed.

The annual Gawad Urian Awards are presented by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, an organization of film critics, writers, and scholars. Established in 1977, the Urian is widely regarded as one of the Philippines' most prestigious film honors, with winners chosen by critic-jurors rather than an industry vote. — Brontë H. Lacsamana
