Pump.fun Launches Perpetual Futures With Up to 40x Leverage via Hyperliquid

Pump.fun has launched perpetual futures trading through Hyperliquid, adding leveraged cryptocurrency contracts to its memecoin-focused services. The Solana-based platform now offers Bitcoin positions with up to 40x leverage and Ethereum positions with up to 25x, running on Hyperliquid's trading infrastructure.

Users can trade these contracts without owning the underlying cryptocurrencies. Hyperliquid supplies the order books and liquidity, while Pump.fun provides the interface for placing trades.

The rollout was highlighted by market commentator Crypto Banter on X:

Unlike traditional futures contracts that carry expiry dates, perpetual futures have no specific date on which a position is settled. That open-ended structure, combined with leverage, is what lets traders control a position many times the size of the collateral they post. The launch followed earlier hints of a collaboration between the two platforms. According to the Pump.fun API, released on October 9, funding rates, open interest, and trading volume are sourced from Hyperliquid's HyperCore mainnet.

How Does Hyperliquid Handle the Trading?

The perpetual futures draw on Hyperliquid's existing order books, meaning Pump.fun does not need to run a special market or build a dedicated derivatives liquidity pool of its own.

HyperCore executes orders, manages margin balances, and calculates funding fees. It is also responsible for liquidating traders who are unable to maintain required margin levels. Pump.fun's role is limited to serving as the entry point for eligible traders, and the split keeps execution on Hyperliquid rather than transferring it to Pump.fun.

The connection between the two platforms was already established before the perpetual futures release. In August, Pump.fun launched HyperEVM support, which enabled USDC payments for spot trades via Hyperliquid's smart contracts.

Hyperliquid was already processing a significant volume of derivatives trading. As of the end of August, daily perpetual futures trading volume on the platform stood at $12.43 billion. Open interest reflects contracts, trading volume represents completed trades, and the funding rate governs the fee payments associated with open positions.

Why Is Pump.fun Moving Beyond Memecoins?

Pump.fun had been generating revenue by listing and trading memecoins on the Solana platform. The addition of perpetual futures creates a separate product alongside the spot market services the company already provides, and it links two companies whose core operations differ: Pump.fun handles token listings and trading, while Hyperliquid operates a derivatives market.

Their revenues were similar at the end of September. Pump.fun recorded $15.16 million in weekly protocol revenue, compared with $15.06 million for Hyperliquid. These figures reflect one week of performance rather than overall revenue growth. The integration provides Pump.fun with one more source of fees, though revenue from its derivatives offering is not yet known. Because funding rates, open interest, and volume for the product flow through the Pump.fun API, those metrics give an externally checkable, running record of how much activity the new market draws.

For Hyperliquid, the integration means another interface through which users can access its order books. Fees from derivatives trading have helped fund purchases of HYPE tokens via the Assistance Fund.

Hyperliquid has also been working separately on bringing commodity futures to regulated US markets — a different initiative from the crypto perpetual futures now available through Pump.fun.

What Are the Risks and Trading Limits?

Perpetual futures allow traders to make leveraged bets without buying BTC or ETH directly. Leverage multiplies both gains and losses; in the event of rapid price changes, the collateral backing a position can be depleted quickly. At 40x leverage, posted collateral amounts to roughly 2.5% of a position's notional value, and at 25x, about 4%, leaving limited room for adverse price movement before a forced liquidation. In a forced liquidation, all of the trader's deposited collateral is taken. Funding rates also influence the cost of maintaining an open position regardless of market price fluctuations.

The Pump.fun team blocks access to perpetual futures for US citizens, people in Ontario, and other prohibited jurisdictions, and these location restrictions are not removed by Pump.fun's trading interface, per its terms and conditions.

The launch occurred amid a decline in the PUMP token's price. According to CoinMarketCap data, the token traded at $0.004432, down 1.5% over the last 24 hours.
