Polkadot has officially opened its Products Devnet, a dedicated environment where developers can prototype and publicly share decentralized Products in the form of static web applications. As a devnet, the environment sits outside the live relay chain, giving builders a low-stakes space to experiment before any mainnet rollout. The initiative encourages builders to move beyond generic tooling and explore highly tailored, personal, or even industrial-scale use cases that could prove extremely valuable.

What the Devnet Offers

A web application running inside the Polkadot host is defined as a Product. The Devnet introduces three specialized chains: contracts and .dot naming are handled on Asset Hub, Polkadot's low-fee hub for assets and smart contracts; the People chain is devoted to identity and personhood; and Bulletin serves as the host for Product bundles.

Developers build with React and @parity/product-sdk, then register their .dot domain and release their Product through the pad CLI. This stack means developers already familiar with mainstream web tooling can work with familiar components rather than blockchain-specific languages, lowering the barrier to entry for consumer app development.

Why Developers and Ecosystems Are Expected to Pay Attention

Parity and the Polkadot Community Foundation are the key architects behind the initiative, providing the SDK, DotNS, and Bulletin infrastructure. The model is designed to reduce the blockchain-related friction in user experience while preserving verifiability.

Beyond the immediate developer benefits, such as feeless hosting and composable identities, the launch signals a shift in direction for Polkadot 2.0 toward consumer-facing applications, with parachain auctions receding into the background.

From Personal Tools to Larger-Scale Applications

Early apps built with the reference tooling include marketplaces such as Mercado and localdot, along with surveys and on-chain forums. These applications demonstrated the ecosystem's potential for industrial marketplace analytics and educational use cases.
