Piramal Finance shares were in focus after the company launched a qualified institutional placement (QIP) to raise up to ₹2,100 crore, according to sources.
A QIP is a capital-raising route in which a listed company issues fresh shares to qualified institutional buyers such as mutual funds, insurers and foreign portfolio investors, and is typically faster than a public offering. While the issuance strengthens a lender's equity base, it also proportionately dilutes the stake of existing shareholders.
Piramal Finance, earlier known as Piramal Capital & Housing Finance, is the lending business of the Piramal group and became a separately listed entity after the demerger of Piramal Enterprises. For lenders regulated by the Reserve Bank of India, capital adequacy — the minimum capital held against risk-weighted assets — is a binding requirement, which in practice ties the pace of loan-book growth to the capital a lender can add, either through retained earnings or fresh equity.
The fundraise is intended to meet future capital requirements for onward lending, support growth in assets under management, and help maintain capital adequacy ratios, the sources said.
The final amount raised, the number of shares issued and the allotment price will be known once the placement is completed and the company makes the required disclosures to the stock exchanges.
