Peter Döhle Returns to Hudong-Zhonghua for Two More Boxships
Key Takeaways
- •Peter Döhle Schiffahrts has reportedly contracted two additional 14,000 teu containerships at Hudong-Zhonghua, raising its series at the yard to six vessels.
- •The 2024 four-ship order was the Hamburg owner's first boxship newbuilding programme in almost nine years, following a long post-crisis ordering lull among German owners.
- •The first vessel was delivered in May, five months ahead of schedule, with a methanol-ready main engine, a shaft generator, and provisions for alternative fuels.
- •Deliveries of the newly ordered pair are scheduled for August and October 2028, while separate feeder orders are due from late 2027 to 2029, all placed at Chinese CSSC yards.
- •Döhle has also been linked to five 8,400 teu LNG dual-fuel ships at around $121m each, as industry-wide boxship ordering since 2024 raises questions about how capacity will be absorbed from 2027.

German tonnage provider Peter Döhle Schiffahrts has been linked to a further pair of containership newbuildings at Hudong-Zhonghua, extending one of the busiest boxship ordering runs among Germany's independent owners.
Shipbuilding sources report that the Hamburg-based company has returned to the CSSC yard for a new two-ship contract covering 14,000 teu vessels, which would bring its series at the yard to six units in total. The 14,000 teu segment has been a focal point for owners renewing mid-size fleets, as such vessels offer flexibility across mainstream east-west and regional trades.
The deal would deepen a relationship that began with a four-ship, 14,000 teu series contracted in 2024 — Döhle's first boxship newbuilding programme in almost nine years. The gap reflects the prolonged ordering lull among many German owners after the 2008-09 financial crisis and the subsequent decade of overcapacity in the container market.
The first vessel from that series was delivered in May this year, five months ahead of schedule. The 335 m ship features a methanol-ready main engine, a shaft generator, and design provisions for alternative fuels — specifications aligned with tightening international emissions rules, including the IMO's carbon-intensity requirements and the EU's inclusion of shipping in its emissions trading system from 2024. Deliveries of the latest pair are scheduled for August and October 2028.
Döhle has been adding tonnage across several size classes. In April, the company booked two 3,100 teu feeders at Chengxi Shipyard for around $48m each, with delivery in 2029. That order followed four 2,900 teu feedermaxes contracted at Huangpu Wenchong for delivery in late 2027 and 2028. All of the orders have been placed at Chinese state-owned CSSC yards, which have captured the bulk of global containership newbuilding contracts in recent years on competitive pricing and delivery-slot availability.
The owner has also been linked to as many as five 8,400 teu LNG dual-fuel ships at Guangzhou Shipyard International, priced at around $121m each. How the wider orderbook — industry-wide boxship capacity on order has climbed sharply since 2024 — is absorbed as these deliveries fall due from 2027 onwards will be a key factor shaping the charter market Döhle's new tonnage will enter.
