OpenAI is building out its subscription stack once again, and this time the pressure is coming from both ends: users who want more than the $20 Plus plan can offer, and a $200 Pro tier so popular that the company has had to stop accepting new subscribers.

The new middle ground

On April 9, 2026, OpenAI added a $100 per month tier positioned between the $20 Plus plan and the $200 Pro plan. The placement is deliberate: the tier provides five times the usage limits of Plus, with a particular emphasis on users who lean heavily on Codex, OpenAI's code-generation capability. By September 2026, the $100 tier also unlocked access to GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's latest flagship model, with an allowance of 50 Astra chat messages per week — an upgrade that arrived roughly five months after the tier itself debuted. The $200 tier, which OpenAI originally launched on December 5, 2024, offers considerably more headroom: 200 Astra messages per week and usage limits set at 20 times what Plus subscribers receive. It also carries priority access to new features and expanded reasoning modes. No plan currently offers unlimited usage.

When demand outruns supply

On September 10, 202, OpenAI paused new sign-ups for the $200 Pro tier, citing unprecedented demand for GPT-6 Astra. Lower-priced plans continued accepting subscribers without interruption, and $200 subscribers saw no change to their service. The pause lands roughly 21 months after the Pro tier first went on sale in December 2024, and it applies only to new subscriptions — readers weighing a move to GPT-6 Astra can still reach it through the open $100 tier, at the lower 50-messages-per-week allowance.

OpenAI had also run a promotional period through May 31, 2026, offering 10 times the normal usage limits as a one-time incentive, which almost certainly accelerated how quickly the $200 tier hit its ceiling.

What this signals for the broader AI market

Anthropic has introduced its own $100 Claude tier, making the mid-range price point a genuine battleground. Users who find the $20 entry tier too restrictive but balk at $200 now have multiple options across providers. Enterprise and Business tiers exist with separate per-seat pricing structures.

With the Pro tier closed to new sign-ups, every week a potential subscriber cannot join is a week they might explore an alternative. The concrete item to watch from here is procedural: whether and when OpenAI reopens the $200 tier to new subscribers.
