Ocoopa Direct is recalling approximately 1.5 million rechargeable hand warmers after receiving hundreds of reports of burn injuries and one reported death, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday.
The lithium-ion batteries inside the recalled devices can overheat and ignite, creating a risk of "serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards," the CPSC said in its recall notice. Lithium-ion battery fires are known to burn intensely and can be difficult to extinguish, a concern that has led the CPSC to issue recalls across a range of consumer products in recent years, from e-bikes and scooters to children's toys.
According to the agency, Ocoopa Direct has received 1,480 reports of the hand warmers overheating, including 15 fires and 350 burn injuries. An 83-year-old consumer in San Diego died in February following an incident involving one of the affected products.
The recall covers Ocoopa rechargeable hand warmers with model numbers UT3053, UT3056, ZLS-118, ZLS-118S, ZLS-118D, H01, and H01(PD). The dual-sided devices were sold in a range of colors and designs, both individually and in packs of two warmers that can be magnetically joined together. Each unit came with a charging cable. The model number is printed on the back of each unit.
The products were available for purchase online through Amazon, Ocoopa's website, and Walmart between September 2018 and May 2026, with prices ranging from $15 to $60. Because the devices were sold over a roughly eight-year span, many units are likely still in consumer hands, particularly ahead of colder months when hand warmers see seasonal use.
The CPSC urged consumers to stop using the recalled hand warmers immediately and to contact Ocoopa Direct for a full refund, issued either as an Ocoopa gift card or through the original method of payment.
The agency also warned consumers not to dispose of the recalled products in household trash or place them in standard recycling or battery collection bins, given the fire risk posed by the lithium-ion batteries. Damaged or recalled lithium-ion batteries require specialized handling through hazardous waste facilities or designated retailers that accept them.
