Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), one of Japan's largest shipping companies and a major operator of LNG carriers, has decided to participate in an investment in MidOcean Energy, a United Kingdom-based liquefied natural gas (LNG) company established and managed by EIG, a leading U.S.-headquartered institutional investor specializing in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
The investment will be executed through Diamond Gas MidOcean Limited ("DGMO"), a entity established by Mitsubishi Corporation (headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) in 2023. NYK will subscribe for all shares to be issued under DGMO's third-party allotment. Upon completion, DGMO is expected to be operated as a jointly owned company by Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK. The structure reflects a broader pattern among Japanese trading houses and shipping lines to deepen coordination across the LNG value chain, from upstream liquefaction stakes to downstream marine transportation.
The share subscription remains subject to competition law approvals and other required regulatory approvals from the relevant authorities. The transaction is expected to close between August and September 2026.
This move marks NYK's continued expansion along the LNG value chain, building on prior investments in the Wheatstone LNG Project and the Cameron LNG Project, as well as in LNG-fueled vessel transportation and LNG bunkering operations. For Japan, which has long ranked among the world's largest LNG importers, securing integrated access to LNG infrastructure remains a strategic priority for energy security. The investment forms part of the growth strategy outlined in NYK's medium-term management plan, titled "Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 — A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing."
In conjunction with this investment, the NYK Group plans to establish a strategic partnership with MidOcean Energy focused on LNG marine transportation. By drawing on the expertise and experience the NYK Group has accumulated in LNG shipping over many years, the company aims to contribute to the further development of MidOcean Energy's LNG value chain and, through these efforts, to global energy security and sustainable development.
