National University (NU) forged a share of the lead with the University of the Philippines (UP) after grinding out a 69-65 victory over Far Eastern University (FEU) in a meeting of emerging squads that closed the first round of UAAP Season 89 men's basketball on Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The Bulldogs clamped down on the usually potent Tamaraws' offense, limiting FEU to just 18 points in the second half to notch a third straight win and pull level with the UP Fighting Maroons at 5-2. NU, by virtue of an earlier 72-64 win over UP, will momentarily hold the top spot entering the second round after a defensive effort that also kept the Tamaraws scoreless over the final five minutes. Second-round results will now help sort out the race for the Final Four.

Macmac Alfanta fired 14 points to spearhead a scattered attack for the Bulldogs, whose winning run is tied with the Fighting Maroons' streak as the longest active this season. PJ Palacielo and Tebol Garcia chipped in 13 points apiece, while Reinhard Jumamoy and Paul Francisco were also instrumental with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Malian anchor Mo Diassana added seven points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. The Tamaraws absorbed their first back-to-back losses to slide to 4-3 after a red-hot start.

"This is a big deal for the team's character, especially since we have a lot of young players," said NU coach Jeff Napa. "Their willingness to work hard came through, allowing us to at least match the effort of the opponent. We just need to stay consistent heading into the second round, because for sure, teams will start taking notice of NU."

NU — which lost its core to graduation, led by Jake Figueroa, Steve Nash Enriquez and Jolo Manansala — leaned on its defensive teeth when it mattered most, holding FEU to just seven points in the payoff period, including zero in the final five minutes while trailing 63-65.

Overall, the Bulldogs surrendered only 18 points to the Tamaraws in the second half after allowing 47 in the first, when they trailed by as many as 35-44 against a FEU side eager to rebound from an 81-69 defeat to the Tigers that ended a four-game run.

Former UAAP juniors season and Finals MVP Cabs Cabonilas led the Tamaraws with 14 points, while reigning UAAP MVP Janrey Pasaol (10) and Mo Konateh (10-15-4) contributed in defeat. Early MVP contender Kirby Mongcopa bled for only two points in the second half to finish with nine.

FEU, which had taken the solo lead on the strength of its best start since its last title run in 2015, tumbled into a logjam in the middle of the standings at 4-3 heading into the crucial second round, still chasing an end to a three-year Final Four drought. At just one game behind the co-leaders, though, the Tamaraws' bid to end that drought remains well within reach.

In women's play, NU (4-1) fended off FEU (2-3), 66-60, to firm up its hold on second spot, while Adamson (3-2) escaped La Salle (1-4), 70-68, to pull level with UP in joint third. The results completed a double victory for NU over the Tamaraws. — John Bryan Ulanday
