The telescope honors NASA's first chief astronomer, Nancy Grace Roman, widely known as the "mother of the Hubble Space Telescope." She passed away in 2018 at the age of 93.
Roman was ranked as a top priority large-scale space mission in the 2010 U.S. astrophysics Decadal Survey, giving the project its scientific mandate long before hardware construction began.
Measuring 42 feet long and over 14 feet wide, the Roman telescope will travel to a gravitationally stable location roughly 930,000 miles from Earth known as the second sun-Earth Lagrange point, the same orbital neighborhood where the James Webb Space Telescope operates.
