Musk’s Grok roadmap
Earlier on September 14, Musk said Grok 4.8 would complete its basic training within the week. The model has 2.5 trillion parameters and runs on a new C++ software stack developed by xAI.
Once basic training is complete, Grok 4.8 will move into reinforcement learning. That process uses feedback and repeated iterations to improve a model’s performance.
When a user asked how close Grok 4.8 would come to AGI, Musk responded: “That will be Grok 5.”
Musk also described the expected performance of several versions. He said Grok 4.7 performs roughly on par with Anthropic’s Opus 5, although it is stronger in some areas and weaker in others. Grok 4.9 would target Astra- or Fable-level performance.
Regarding Grok 5, Musk wrote: “Maybe better than anything. We shall see.”
xAI has expanded quickly by combining large computing clusters with real-time data from X and engineering knowledge drawn from SpaceX. However, whether Grok 5 will achieve AGI remains uncertain. Although xAI has narrowed performance gaps with established AI laboratories, matching or exceeding human-level performance across all tasks would be a first for any AI company.
