Key Takeaways

  • •Multicoin Capital co-founder Tushar Jain identified "bear market trauma" as a common investor mistake in which prolonged declines cause traders to underestimate how powerful bull market price movements can become.
  • •Jain predicted that Bitcoin and Ethereum will significantly underperform other high-quality crypto assets this cycle, which could trigger a rotation of capital into altcoins and drive sharper gains in those tokens.
  • •He pointed to Ethereum's 2017 climb from $10 to $1,000 and Solana's 2021 surge from $2 to $250 as historical examples of extreme bull market appreciation.
  • •According to CoinGecko figures cited by Jain, total cryptocurrency market capitalization expanded nearly fourfold from about $770 billion in 2021 to $3 trillion.
  • •Jain contended that if the overall market grows only twofold this cycle, from $2.1 trillion to $4.2 trillion, altcoins could still rally substantially because capital allocation across assets would matter more than total market growth.
Multicoin Co-Founder Tushar Jain Says Bitcoin and Ethereum Will Lag Behind This Cycle, Sees Sharper Gains for High-Quality Altcoins

Tushar Jain, co-founder of cryptocurrency investment firm Multicoin Capital — an early investor in Solana — said that prolonged periods of price declines can erode investors’ faith in powerful bull market movements.

According to Jain, Bitcoin ($BTC) and Ethereum ($ETH) lagging behind the broader market in the current cycle could prompt capital to rotate into high-quality altcoins, setting the stage for far sharper gains in those assets.

Jain identified one of the most common investor mistakes as “bear market trauma” — forgetting how powerful price movements can become in a bull market after a long and painful stretch of decline. He cited Ethereum’s rise from $10 to $1,000 in 2017 and Solana’s (SOL) increase from $2 to $250 in 2021 as examples.

Jain said he believes $BTC and $ETH will underperform significantly compared with other high-quality crypto assets in the current market cycle. For that reason, he argued, the total cryptocurrency market capitalization may not need to grow as much as it did in the previous cycle for altcoins to deliver substantial price increases. A rotation of that kind would show up in the market share of the two largest crypto assets — a dominance metric that data providers such as CoinGecko publish alongside total market capitalization.

Citing CoinGecko data, Jain noted that the total cryptocurrency market capitalization nearly quadrupled, expanding from approximately $770 billion in 2021 to $3 trillion. He added that if the overall market were to grow only twofold this time, the total value could climb from $2.1 trillion to $4.2 trillion — a scenario in which, under his thesis, how capital is distributed across assets would matter more than how much the grows overall.
