MTN Nigeria Marks 25 Years with Y'ello Street, Celebrating Nation's Telecommunications Transformation

MTN Nigeria has described its Y'ello Street exhibition as a symbol of how the country's voice and data connectivity landscape has evolved over the past quarter century.

Speaking to journalists and guests at the MTN Plaza on Monday, the company's Chief Financial Officer, Modupe Kadri, emphasized that the milestone extends beyond MTN Nigeria's own 25th anniversary.

"We are celebrating 25 years of believing in Nigeria, 25 years of connecting people, 25 years of investing, 25 years of innovation, 25 years of learning, sometimes stumbling, adapting and getting better, 25 years of being privileged to participate in one of the most remarkable transformations in modern Nigeria," Kadri said in his opening address.

Since launching on 19 May 2001, MTN Nigeria has enabled millions of Nigerians to stay in touch with family and friends across vast distances — at a time when platforms like WhatsApp and TikTok had not yet been conceived. The company entered the market shortly after Nigeria's telecommunications liberalisation and the introduction of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), becoming the country's first mobile network operator to launch commercial services. MTN Nigeria, a subsidiary of South Africa-based MTN Group, is today the largest mobile operator in Africa's most populous nation.

The Y'ello Street exhibition was created to commemorate the shared experiences of the past 25 years. It serves as an immersive gallery tracing MTN Nigeria's journey, its technological advancement, and its enduring relationship with customers. Visitors can reflect on the past, examine historical artefacts, and revisit key milestones.

"Y'ello Street is not simply a museum about the empty; it is in many ways a museum about Nigeria. It tells the story of what happens when technology meets human possibilities," Kadri noted.

The exhibition's history lane features photographs documenting transitions in MTN Nigeria's CEO and Chairman appointments, as well as the evolution of the brand logo. On display are vintage mobile phones, paper scratch recharge cards, legacy products, past advertising campaigns, former logos, and outdated technologies.

Kadri explained that these artefacts represent a period of genuine human connection, when Nigerians were embracing a newfound freedom to communicate.

"Behind every new generation of technology from 2G to 3G to 4G and now 5G were new businesses, new industries, new opportunities, new jobs and possibilities that did not previously exist. And behind every memorable campaign was something even more important: the Nigerian people themselves," he added.

Y'ello Street opened on August 10 at the MTN Plaza car park in Ikoyi, Lagos, and will remain open to Nigerians and visitors through August 17.

With MTN Nigeria now serving 92 million subscribers, the company says its next phase of growth will hinge on how effectively it meets the evolving needs of its customer base over the coming 25 years.

"If the transformation between 2001 and 2026 has been extraordinary, I believe what lies ahead can even be more profound," the CFO said.

He noted that the central question is what the next quarter century will make possible — whether through artificial intelligence, fintech, cloud computing, digital infrastructure, 5G networks, or technologies yet to emerge.

As internet connectivity increasingly shapes the trajectory of network expansion and customer experience, MTN indicated it will continue to invest in network growth and pursue innovations aligned with the rising demands of its subscriber base.
