Morgan Stanley Bitcoin ETF Approaches $400 Million in Assets Within Months of Launch

Morgan Stanley's Bitcoin exchange-traded fund has amassed nearly $400 million in assets under management, despite having launched only in April.

The NYSE Arca-listed fund — the first Bitcoin ETF issued by a major U.S. bank — generated strong demand at its debut, pulling in more than $33 million on its first day of trading. The fund now holds over $391 million in assets, a level of growth that many ETFs never reach at any point in their lifecycle, let alone within a single quarter. The launch came months after the SEC's January 2024 approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs, a regulatory milestone that opened the door for Wall Street's largest institutions to offer direct Bitcoin exposure products to mainstream investors.

Senior Bloomberg Intelligence ETF analyst Eric Balchunas disclosed Friday that the product ranks among the most successful fund launches of the year. According to data from Farside Investors, investors directed $15.7 million in new cash into the fund this week alone. While BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust and Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund dominate the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market with tens of billions in combined assets, Morgan Stanley's entry marks a distinct category: a product created and branded by a systemically important bank rather than an asset manager.

Morgan Stanley has been expanding its cryptocurrency footprint for several years. In 2021, the bank began offering wealthy clients exposure to Bitcoin through investment vehicles managed by firms such as Galaxy Digital. Last year, CEO and Chairman Ted Pick stated that the bank was engaging with regulators to determine how crypto offerings could be provided safely. In April, Amy Oldenburg, the bank's head of digital assets, said that client education — rather than product design — remains the primary challenge to broader Bitcoin adoption.

Broader U.S. Bitcoin ETF Flows

American Bitcoin ETFs have attracted fresh inflows over the past seven days, following a period of sustained outflows and volatile price action. Farside Investors data indicates that these products received a combined $274 million in new investment so far this week.

The funds had been on an extended winning streak, pulling in nearly $1 billion over a seven-day period. That trend was interrupted on Thursday, when every Bitcoin ETF recorded outflows — with the sole exception of Morgan Stanley's product.

Bitcoin was recently trading at approximately $64,096, down more than 1% over the preceding 24 hours. The cryptocurrency's price has remained largely flat over a seven-day period.

European asset management firm CoinShares noted last week that while investors are once again directing capital into Bitcoin ETFs, other factors may prevent digital asset markets from advancing further.

"We see no significant upside potential from here," wrote James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares.
