Japan's Mitsui E&S has completed the commercialisation of its ammonia dual-fuel engines and ammonia fuel supply systems and can now supply the equipment for actual vessels, the company announced on 20 August 2026.

The milestone follows integrated land-based testing of the Mitsui-Everllence ammonia dual-fuel engine — a 7S60ME-C10.5-LGIA-HPSCR design — and its fuel supply system, which was completed in February 2026. Mitsui E&S, which manufactures two-stroke marine engines under Everllence licence, had earlier begun testing of the ammonia engine and fuel systems in Japan as part of the development programme.

The tests were witnessed by ClassNK, Japan's classification society, and verified the performance of both the engine and the fuel supply system. Mitsui E&S said the testing was completed in line with classification society rules, while NOx certification confirmed compliance with IMO requirements, the nitrogen oxide limits that govern marine engines under the MARPOL Annex VI framework. The engine's HPSCR designation denotes a high-pressure selective catalytic reduction arrangement, an aftertreatment technology used to control NOx emissions from ammonia combustion.
