Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank) is reporting robust adoption of its online savings accounts among young Filipinos, a trend the bank says reflects a broader shift toward digital banking products.
Citing internal data released in a statement on Thursday, Metrobank said Gen Zs and Millennials now represent more than 87% of all eSavings accounts opened since the beginning of the year.
"The figures point to a shift in how Filipinos are building their financial habits, choosing to save through digital platforms that are accessible anytime and anywhere," the bank said.
Metrobank noted that nearly half of its eSavings users are based in Metro Manila and Region IV-A (CALABARZON), areas with high concentrations of young professionals. This, the bank said, underscores strong adoption among digitally connected, working-age Filipinos. It added that the majority of eSavings account holders are female.
The trend comes as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas continues to advance its financial inclusion and digitalization agenda, with the central bank having licensed several digital banks in recent years to expand access to formal financial services. Traditional lenders like Metrobank have been enhancing their digital channels alongside competition from both digital-only banks and widely used e-wallet platforms.
Metrobank emphasized that the appeal of its digital savings product extends beyond convenience. "The figures suggest that convenience is only part of the appeal. As more young adults begin building careers, supporting their families, or planning for major life milestones, the importance of developing healthy financial habits has become more apparent. A savings account often serves as the starting point, not only for managing day-to-day finances but also for preparing for bigger financial goals," the bank said.
The institution also highlighted its commitment to making saving accessible regardless of initial deposit size. "Saving doesn't always begin with a large amount. More often, it starts with having the right tools that make the habit simple and accessible. By making these products available through its online banking channels, Metrobank aims to support customers throughout their financial journey, from developing the habit of saving, to growing their wealth over time."
As part of its ongoing promotion, Metrobank is offering a P100 Lazada Gift Card to new clients who open a Metrobank eSavings account through the bank's mobile app and register for the promo. The offer runs until September 30 and is subject to terms and conditions.
