Metaplanet CEO Says Strategy’s Bitcoin Accumulation Logic Has Not Changed

Simon Gerovich, CEO of Japan-based investment company Metaplanet, said the core structure and logic behind Strategy’s long-running Bitcoin accumulation strategy have not fundamentally changed.

In a social media post, Gerovich said market perceptions of Strategy’s approach, formerly associated with MicroStrategy, have shifted several times over the years, but the company itself has continued to follow the same basic plan.

Gerovich noted that Strategy began its Bitcoin initiative in August 2020. At the time, he said, a software company with a market capitalization of about $1 billion placing $250 million worth of Bitcoin on its balance sheet was widely viewed as an unusual, one-time move.

That perception changed after Strategy’s shares later rose by approximately tenfold, leading some market participants to characterize the decision as a “visionary” investment strategy. The narrative shifted again when steep declines in the Bitcoin market caused Strategy shares to lose about 90% of their value, after which the strategy was described by some as a failed experiment.

According to Gerovich, those changes reflected shifts in market perception rather than any change in Strategy’s underlying approach. He said the company continued to buy Bitcoin through the market’s ups and downs and now holds 843,775 BTC.

At current market prices, those holdings are estimated to be worth more than $50 billion. With that level of Bitcoin exposure, Strategy remains the world’s largest institutional Bitcoin investor.

The comments matter because Strategy has become a reference point for listed companies using Bitcoin as a treasury asset. For such companies, large Bitcoin holdings can make balance sheet value and investor sentiment more sensitive to crypto market cycles, even when the stated accumulation policy remains unchanged.

Gerovich’s comments attracted attention in part because Metaplanet has also been adding Bitcoin to its balance sheet on a regular basis. Through purchases made in recent months, the company has been advancing its own institutional Bitcoin strategy, and many investors view Metaplanet as one of the Japanese companies adopting the “Strategy model.”
