Only 22 Tokens Have Outperformed Bitcoin Over the Past Two Years, Messari Analysis Finds

Author: Cryptopolitan·

Key Takeaways

  • Only 22 tokens have beaten Bitcoin's price performance over the past 24 months, down from roughly 187 during the 2020–2021 bull market peak.
  • OKB is the sole token that has maintained its outperformance against Bitcoin when measured back to the November 2021 cycle peak.
  • Exchange-linked tokens represented the largest segment of Bitcoin outperformers at 32%, benefiting from trading volume ties, fee discounts, and supply-reduction mechanisms.
  • Of the 187 tokens that outperformed Bitcoin in 2021, 86% have since fallen by at least 90% from their all-time highs with a median decline of 98%.
  • Bitcoin's dominance has remained elevated through 2026, with over 84% of altcoins trading below their 200-day moving average by late June, limiting capital rotation into smaller assets.
Only 22 Tokens Have Outperformed Bitcoin Over the Past Two Years, Messari Analysis Finds

Only 22 tokens have delivered better price performance than Bitcoin over the past 24 months, according to an analysis posted by Messari analyst Carlos Gonzalez Campo on August 4. Of that select group, only OKB — the native exchange token of OKX — has maintained its outperformance against BTC when measured back to the 2021 cycle peak.

The findings mark a dramatic narrowing of the field. At the height of the 2020–2021 bull market, approximately 187 coins were outperforming Bitcoin. By 2026, the list of tokens posting returns comparable to BTC has contracted sharply, with names rotating at an even faster pace. Notably, very few of the tokens currently on the short list of Bitcoin outperformers even existed four years ago. The contraction coincides with a period in which spot Bitcoin ETFs — approved by U.S. regulators in January 2024 — have channeled significant institutional capital into BTC, reinforcing its liquidity advantage over smaller assets.

Exchange Tokens Dominate the Outperformer Roster

Exchange-linked tokens accounted for the largest segment among the assets Messari identified as beating Bitcoin, holding a 32% share of the group. Binance's BNB, OKX's OKB, Gate's GT, Bitfinex's LEO, Bitget's BGB, WhiteBIT's WBT, MEXC's MX, and PancakeSwap's CAKE all featured on the list. PancakeSwap's CAKE was the only decentralized exchange (DEX) token to clear the threshold. Exchange tokens have historically benefited from direct ties to platform trading volume, fee-discount utility, and in some cases structured buyback or burn mechanisms that reduce circulating supply — features most standalone protocol tokens lack.

Establishment cryptocurrencies including Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and TRON also made the cut, accompanied by a small number of meme coin projects and breakout performers from various market cycles.

Within this group, OKB stands alone. It is the only token to have sustained its lead over Bitcoin dating as far back as November 2021. Of the 187 names that comprised the Bitcoin outperformer class of 2021, 86% have since collapsed by at least 90% from their all-time highs. The median decline across that cohort sits at 98%.

Messari shared the analysis on X, underscoring how dramatically the competitive landscape has shifted.

Projects Rotate Leadership Across Cycles

While different projects have cycled through market leadership across various periods, Bitcoin has consistently retained its role as the industry benchmark, demonstrating resilience through successive waves of hype and drawdowns.

When Bitcoin slipped below $70,000 and shed roughly 12% over a two-week stretch in June 2026, three tokens that managed to outperform it during that window — NEAR Protocol, Internet Computer (ICP), and Render (RENDER) — were all associated with the artificial intelligence narrative.

DeFi projects also posted notable performances in June. Hyperliquid (HYPE) was up more than 160% year-to-date at that point. However, other former cycle leaders such as Uniswap, Ondo, and Aave carried double-digit losses for the year — a lag that Bitwise analysts characterized as a "quiet repricing" of the sector.

Bitcoin Maintains Its Grip

Those individual gains came in narrow windows, and the broader altcoin market remained weak. By late June, more than 84% of altcoins were trading below their 200-day moving average — the longest sustained depressed stretch since the 2022 bear market, CryptoQuant analyst Darkfrost told Cryptopolitan.

He cautioned that altcoins now track Bitcoin's movements closely and tend to fall harder when BTC declines, making it more difficult to identify the next set of winners than in previous cycles. The correlation reflects a market structure in which Bitcoin's share of total crypto market capitalization — a metric known as BTC dominance — has remained elevated, limiting capital rotation into smaller assets.

July brought only a partial recovery. Bitcoin gained 9.03% for the month and still outperformed the majority of altcoins and tokens, though Ether outpaced both with a 20.32% return, as Cryptopolitan reported.

The pattern throughout the year has been consistent: outperforming Bitcoin has become the exception rather than the rule, and few tokens have proven capable of sustaining such an edge over extended periods.
