First Lady Melania Trump drew mockery from critics on Thursday as she made her first public appearance in roughly a month.

Trump appeared at an event in the White House Rose Garden, the outdoor space adjacent to the Oval Office that is frequently used for presidential ceremonies and announcements, where she announced a landmark strategic alliance with Fox Corporation, the media company, and IndyCar, the American open-wheel auto racing series. The partnership is tied to Fostering the Future, the initiative she launched in 2021 to support young people aging out of the foster care system, and it brings together two organizations with an existing business relationship: Fox Sports became the exclusive broadcast home of the NTT IndyCar Series at the start of the 2025 season, taking over the races previously carried by NBC.

"Good afternoon, I heard you missed me," Trump said. "I heard you missed me."

The appearance came as questions continued to swirl about her husband, President Donald Trump, and his relationship with his aide, Natalie Harp, whom some have dubbed the president's "security blanket." Harp, a former One America News television host, served as a White House aide during Trump's first term before joining his 2024 campaign, and her frequent presence at the president's side has drawn outsized attention in coverage of the White House. It was Trump's first public appearance in some time, and the event quickly sparked mockery from some of the president's critics on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

"Interesting timing," the MeidasTouch Network, a progressive media network, posted on X.

"She hasn’t been seen in a month. Now she conveniently pops up amid a scandal about Trump’s inappropriate relationship with Natalie," Sawyer Hackett, a political strategist, posted on X.

"Yesterday there was a run of stories about how Melania Trump hadn't made a public appearance in a month. Today, here she is. See you in September, ma'am," author Mike Rothschild posted on X.

"Wow...you actually make an appearance," Donald Blais Jr., a former town councilor in Massachusetts, posted on X.

Melania Trump, a former model born in Slovenia, is serving her second stint as first lady, having previously held the role during President Trump's first term from 2017 to 2021. Harp, an aide to the president, also worked in the Trump White House during his first administration. The first lady's sparse public schedule has been a recurring storyline of her second tenure — she has divided her time among the White House, the family's Florida home and New York, where son Barron is in college — and it is not the first time an absence has fueled public interest: a weeks-long gap in her appearances in 2018, following a medical procedure, prompted similar questions during her first term. Whether Thursday's appearance marks the start of a more regular public calendar remained unclear.
