Sam Altman-Backed Bitcoin Insurer Meanwhile Raises $37.5 Million in Bain Capital Crypto-Led Round

Bitcoin-focused life insurer Meanwhile has raised $37.5 million in an investment round led by Bain Capital Crypto, bringing the Bermuda-based company's total funding to $180 million as it expands beyond the United States.

Bain Capital Crypto, an existing investor, led the round with participation from Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo and others, according to an emailed announcement issued on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a life insurer backed by OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman, offers life insurance policies whose premiums and death benefits are denominated in bitcoin (BTC) rather than traditional fiat currencies. Bitcoin was changing hands at $82,800.62 at the time of publication. Because both the premium paid in and the benefit paid out are fixed in BTC, their value in traditional currency terms moves with bitcoin's market price — a structure that ties long-term family financial planning directly to the asset's performance.

The company's approach reflects efforts to build the largest cryptocurrency into traditional wealth-management products, extending its use beyond investment and trading and into inheritance and insurance. Its BTC Life 1-Pay product, introduced earlier this year, allows customers to pay a single bitcoin premium in exchange for a guaranteed death benefit denominated in BTC, placing the asset in the same estate-planning role that life insurance has long occupied alongside wills and trusts.

Meanwhile received its insurance license from the Bermuda Monetary Authority in 2024, giving the company the regulatory authorization to underwrite bitcoin-denominated policies from outside the United States. As part of its international push, the company has signed 15 brokers serving high-net-worth clients across markets including Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates, according to the announcement. The broker signings give the insurer distribution in several of the world's established private-wealth centers, and how demand develops among high-net-worth clients in those jurisdictions will offer an early read on the product's appeal beyond the U.S. market.

The new raise comes roughly one year after the insurer secured $82 million in its previous funding round.
