  • •The API-based, platform-agnostic service evaluates transaction context, fund origins, restricted-party involvement, and scam signals to deliver a risk score before settlement, since reversing on-chain fraudulent transfers is far harder than preventing them.
  • •A study cited by Mastercard examined 593 million stablecoin transaction events across 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025 and found nearly 60% involved complex multi-step activity rather than simple wallet-to-wallet transfers.
  • •Borderless.xyz, which links financial institutions to licensed stablecoin providers across more than 113 countries and 72 currencies, and Keyrails, a specialist in cross-border trade payments, are the product's first partners.
  • •The service will roll out first in North America, become commercially available worldwide in 2027, and reach market through direct integration into banks' compliance systems as well as the BVNK stablecoin platform Mastercard acquired in August 2026.
Mastercard Launches Stablecoin Security to Screen Risk Before Funds Move On-Chain

Mastercard has announced a new security product designed to strengthen stablecoin infrastructure for banks and payment providers. Unveiled at Money20/20 USA, the financial services and payments industry conference, Stablecoin Security gives financial institutions a clearer view of risk across both fiat and blockchain payment flows, helping them identify fraud, sanctions exposure, and malicious activity before stablecoin payments are finalized.

The system combines Mastercard's long-standing payment intelligence with blockchain analytics and produces a risk score before funds move on-chain. Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the first partners, with commercial availability planned worldwide in 2027.

Mastercard Targets the Hidden Complexity of Stablecoin Payments

A key challenge, known as traversal risk, has emerged in cross-border payments that move through different wallets, providers, and blockchain addresses rather than traveling directly from sender to recipient. The problem has grown more pressing as stablecoins make cross-border transfers faster.

Mastercard cited a study that examined 593 million transaction events involving stablecoins across 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025. Nearly 60% of those events involved complex multi-step activity rather than simple wallet-to-wallet transfers.

That complexity can make it difficult for banks to detect fraud, exposure to scams or sanctioned entities, and other indicators of financial crime before a payment is executed, since risk can surface at any step along a multi-hop path rather than only at its endpoints. Mastercard's new system addresses the gap by bringing blockchain data together with the commerce intelligence already operating across the traditional financial system.

Risk Scores Arrive Before Funds Move On-Chain

Stablecoin Security is delivered through an application programming interface (API) and is platform-agnostic, allowing banks to connect it to their existing fraud and compliance systems.

The product examines factors such as transaction context, the origin of funds, involvement of restricted parties, and signals associated with scams. It then calculates a risk score prior to settlement, enabling institutions to either proceed with a payment or route it for secondary review.

The pre-settlement checkpoint is especially significant for stablecoin transfers. Once funds have moved on-chain, reversing a fraudulent transaction is far more difficult than preventing it beforehand, which is why Mastercard identified the moment before settlement as the critical intervention point.

Mastercard says institutions can integrate the service into their existing compliance and case-management teams and systems without building a new operating system for crypto paymentsn

Borderless and Keyrails Bring the Service Into Live Payment Flows

Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the first companies to put Stablecoin Security to work. Borderless connects financial institutions with licensed stablecoin providers across more than 113 countries and 72 currencies, while Keyrails specializes in cross-border trade payments across high-value markets, particularly within emerging economies.

Their engagement provides Mastercard with a head start in real-world stablecoin settlement applications, positioning the company for greater traction in use cases such as supplier payments and global trade.

Global Rollout Planned for 2027

Stablecoin Security is rolling out first in North America and will be commercially available worldwide in 2027. Mastercard also announced plans to expand distribution through BVNK, the stablecoin platform it acquired in August 2026. That setup gives the service two routes to market: direct API integration into banks' existing fraud and compliance stacks, and distribution through an established stablecoin payments platform.

As banks continue to move into blockchain-based settlement, the product joins Mastercard's broader digital asset security offering, which includes Mastercard Crypto Credential and Crypto Secure.
